Ireland would have fancied their chances when the day started, but Rahmat Shah and Ihsanullah dug in and kept churning out the runs at a fair clip to take their side over the line. The scenes out on the field are quite jubilant, the entire team is one close unit, huddled together, jumping around and screaming with immense fervour. A maiden Test win, after all those years of battling it out it sure a joy to behold.

This win was all down to the bowling performance of the bowlers, who restricted Ireland on Day 1 and then came back to restrict them to a manageable total in the second innings. The journey keeps getting better for these men and with the World Cup fast approaching, it promises to a good year for the side.

It was Afghanistan’s second Test outing after making their five-day debut last year when they lost to India inside two days in Bangalore. Ireland have also played two Tests.

“Happy. It’s a historic day for Afghanistan, for our team and our people,” Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan. “We have been playing for a while, we have been playing first-class cricket, so we have that composure. The bowlers were very good, Rashid, Yamin. Now we’re going to South Africa for World Cup preparation. We will try out best to play good cricket.”
