The T20 Asia Cup has produced some thrilling contests since its first edition in the shortest format, but centuries have been rare. In fact, only two batters have ever crossed the three-figure mark in the tournament’s T20I history-Babar Hayat of Hong Kong and Virat Kohli of India. Interestingly, both reached the same score: 122.
In February 2016, during a qualifier match at Fatullah, Hong Kong found themselves chasing a daunting target of 181 against Oman. The innings began poorly, but Babar Hayat launched a counterattack that lit up the night. He played with fearless intent, smashing 122 off just 60 balls, studded with nine fours and seven sixes. Despite his heroics, Hong Kong fell agonisingly short by five runs, finishing at 175 for 7. It was a knock that could not deliver victory, yet it remains recorded as the first T20 Asia Cup century.
Six years later, in September 2022, Virat Kohli notched up his own Asia Cup hundred in Dubai, against Afghanistan. Opening the innings alongside KL Rahul, he paced his knock with characteristic control and flair. After a steady start, he gradually shifted gears, by playing classic strokes. He reached his hundred in 53 balls and stayed unbeaten on 122 from 61 deliveries, studded with 12 fours and six sixes. India piled up 212 for 2 and cruised to a 101-run victory, thanks also to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 5 for 4. For Kohli, the century carried added weight as it ended a nearly three-year wait for an international hundred.
Though separated by six years and played in contrasting circumstances, Hayat and Kohli’s knocks remain the only two centuries in the T20 Asia Cup. Hayat’s was a lone fight in a losing cause, while Kohli’s was a triumphant return to form.
