The master batsman, who required 15 runs to overcome Lara's record before the Mohali Test, hit Aussie debutant Peter Siddle and got those remaining two runs by guiding one to third man.

As PCA erupted into joy and spectators, whose presence was thin on Friday, stood up and congratulated the champion.

The crackers continued to burst for five minutes and smoke filled the sky on the north pavilion side.

India's former captain Sourav Ganguly, who was batting on the other end went up to Sachin and congratulated him and so did the Australian skipper Ricky Ponting and his teammates.

The 35-year-old Tendulkar raised his bat and held his head towards the sky as if to thank the almighty.
