Adelaide Strikers beat Brisbane Heat by 7 wickets

Commentary

11:33 AM IST What does the New Year bring in for the Big Bash? Plenty of excitement, anticipations and double the fun, hopefully! The day kicks off with Melbourne Renegades hosting the Sydney Sixers at the Docklands, followed by the Hobart Hurricanes-Perth Scorchers clash in Hobart. The games are scheduled to begin at 5 am GMT and 8.15 am GMT respectively, but our buildup will begin well in advance. So do tune in early on Thursday, 1st January, 2026 for all the action. On that note, we bid adieu to 2025 and wish you all a very happy 2026! ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
11:31 AM IST So Adelaide Strikers get back to winning on New Year's Eve, and end their 2025 on a fine note. They move up to number 4 in the points table and will go in with full confidence to Perth, to take on the Scorchers on Sunday, 4th January, 2026. The Heat have slipped down to 5th but they will have to get back to the drawing board to put up a formidable playing XI for the rest of the tournament. They end their 2025 on a sour note but will hope to begin the new year on a nice note by hosting the Melbourne Stars at the 'Gabba, on Friday, 2nd January, 2026.
11:43 AM IST Adelaide Strikers' LIAM SCOTT HAS BEEN NAMED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his miserly spell of 4-0-12-2 with the ball and is up for a quick chat with Greg Blewett. He begins by saying that it is always nice to contribute to the win. Shares that's his role, to make a strong impact in the game. Adds that Chris Lynn is a class player and Jamie Overton has played plenty of franchise cricket over the years. On getting an opportunity to bowl with the new ball, he says it was about the match-ups and he was trying to swing the ball into the batters. Mentions that the crowd at Adelaide Oval is always amazing, and it feels nice to see forty thousand odd people cheering for you. Ends up by saying that he is hopeful that his side will do better in Perth as well in its next game.
11:26 AM IST Tough night for the Heat. After a miserable display with the bat, they started well with the ball, but did not have much wickets to show for their efforts. There seems to be a massive lack of experience in that bowling unit and one fears, this is just the start of their drubbing for the season, unless they find some really talented bowlers. For the Strikers, everyone bowled well, but Jamie Overton (3/19) and Liam Scott (2/12) choked the Heat.
11:40 AM IST This season is touted as being a very important one for Chris Lynn. There are talks going around that this could be his final season in the Big Bash League and hence, he wants to go out on a bang. Normally, he does not play all the matches through the season, but this year, he has worked hard on his fitness and aims to play each and every match. After a quiet start to the season, Lynn ramped it up in Adelaide, with a fine unbeaten 79 (41), studded with 6 sixes and 6 fours. Because he played the way he did, Adelaide did not get affected by the lack of runs from the other batters. Who knows, if Lynn had gotten out early, we could have had some sort of a contest.
11:20 AM IST This match had the threat of being a one-sided encounter, with Brisbane Heat literally stripped off their bowlers, with injuries hitting them one after the other. So when a score of 121 was posted on the board, the run chase became a mere formality. Despite that, the Heat did start well, not allowing the home side to get away, keeping them in check till the 10th over, even though they picked just a solitary wicket. However, with the Power Surge being taken immediately after the Drinks break in the 11th, Chris Lynn swung some momentum his side's way and knocked the Heat out cold.
11:17 AM IST The curse of New Year's Eve is lifted at last from the Adelaide Strikers. After winning regularly on 31st December from 2013-2018, they struggled to win a single match on this day from 2019 and finally, in 2025, have got the monkey off their back. Their new-ball burst set up the win, while Lynnsanity has pushed the Strikers into the top four, improving their net run rate massively.

Thomas Balkin to Jerrssis Wadia, no run

OUT! TOP EDGE, AND CAUGHT! A bit of a rush of blood from the youngster and Wadia's short stay comes to an end. Balkin bangs it short and pushes it across the latter, on the off pole, Jerrssis Wadia weighs back and tries to pull it over square leg, but the ball seemingly gets big on him and balloons up off the top edge. Thomas Balkin calls for his catch and settles under it to gather it safely. Wadia goes for 1 (2) and the Strikers are 95/3.

11.2

Xavier Bartlett to Mackenzie Harvey, no run

OUT! CAUGHT! Bartlett gets a wicket. A good bouncer, around middle, looks like Harvey had already made up his mind on coming down the track. Hence, got surprised by the bouncer, but still, went through with his shot. Got it off the top half of the bat and the ball flew towards deep square leg. Hugh Weibgen charged in from deep backward square leg and nearly overran it, just about managing to cling onto the ball in the end. Harvey departs for 11 (11) and the 35-run stand is broken. Adelaide Strikers are 86/2 and need another 36 from 52 balls.

Misfield and that will be another brace. Wildermuth goes fuller and Lynn goes straighter. Backs away and muscles this back towards the bowler. Jack Wildermuth to Mackenzie Harvey, 1 run

Full and outside off, Mackenzie Harvey goes down on a knee and creams the drive through the covers where a half stop is made. Single taken.

10:55 AM IST DRINKS BREAK. A pretty meandering chase so far. As mentioned before the Heat have a deprived bowling attack, but still, they have done reasonably well to keep the Strikers in check. Yes, at 69/1, the home side looks well in control, but given the quality of the Heat attack, the hosts could have easily been close to 90 or 100 by now. It will be interesting to see when do Adelaide go all out after the bowling. It is a great opportunity to try and win inside 15 or 16 overs, so the Surge might be taken soon. The ball is not stopping as much as it did in the first innings, but stroke-making is still not that easy. Right then. ADELAIDE STRIKERS TAKE THE POWER SURGE. Jack Wildermuth to bowl. 2-0-5-0 so far.

Matthew Kuhnemann to Chris Lynn, no run

Big appeal for LBW, not given. The Heat have reviewed this. My initial reaction was an inside edge. It was a full ball outside off and Chris Lynn got down to sweep. He missed it and was hit on the pads. Nothing on UltraEdge when the ball is close to bat or gloves. However, Ball Tracking shows the impact to be outside off. On his team's bowling display, Overton credits Liam Scott and Luke Wood for starting well in the Powerplay, which set the tone for his side. On his own pace, clocking 148.5 kph, Jamie honestly admits that it was probably the quickest for a long time. Adds that he probably clocked 150 kph when he was 18 or 19 but has not been able to get anywhere close in the last few years. Just hopes to keep the body going. On the pitch, JO says that it felt okay, like a bit more soft and the ball couldn't quite come up. Adds that cross-batted shots seemed risky. Agrees that the New Year's Eve match is an important one for the Strikers but even otherwise, the team is eager to join the 4-points club.

Jack Wildermuth to Matthew Short, no run

Swing and a miss! A slower one by the looks of it, on a good length, on top of middle. Matthew Short tries to pull it to the leg side, only to get deceived by the pace.

Jack Wildermuth to Matthew Short, no run

Touch full, around off, Short presses forward and laces it away, but straight to mid off.

Xavier Bartlett to Matthew Short, 4 runs

FOUR! CLASSY! He is just so strong square of the wicket. On a length, outside off, Matthew Short comes forward and punches it square on the off side. That shows what a good surface this still is, for batting.

Xavier Bartlett to Matthew Short, no run

BEATEN! Top seed from the skipper. Angles in and then curves away from the batter, on a good length, in that fourth-fifth stump corridor, inviting the batter to play with the angle. Matthew Short is sucked on the front foot to block, but gets beaten on the outside edge. A slight appeal from Bartlett for caught behind, but he was the only one interested. UltraEdge later shows a flat line.

Xavier Bartlett to Chris Lynn, 6 runs

ballImg136.6kph

SIX! It took the Heat 69 balls to hit their first six. The Strikers have hit their first on the 8th ball. Not the biggest six hit by Lynn in his entire career by any means, but he will take it. On a length, around middle and off, Chris Lynn heaves it over mid-wicket. Might have got it off the toe end of the bat because while the ball got the elevation, there was not enough distance. Just about landed outside the ropes. 106 more needed from 112 balls.

Xavier Bartlett to Chris Lynn, 2 runs

This one comes back in on middle and leg, Chris Lynn hits it off the inner half and flicks it to deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs.

WIDE! Like Patterson, the skipper too starts off with a wide. But it is down leg, on a fuller length. Lynn misses his flick. Collected by the keeper to his left.

10:09 AM IST Left-arm quicks then, to start both innings. Understandably, Luke Wood found more control than the debutant, Ollie Patterson. It was not a bad over, but not one which a fielding captain would want with just 121 on the board. There would be more expectations from this end, as skipper Xavier Bartlett takes the ball in his hand. No swing so far.

Ollie Patterson to Matthew Short, no run

Fuller ball, on the fourth stump line, Matthew Short carves it on the bounce to mid off. Decent start for the Strikers. 7 off the opening over. They need 115 more.

10:07 AM IST Just an FYI - this is CHRIS LYNN'S 300TH T20 MATCH! What a servant he has been for the sport.

Ollie Patterson to Matthew Short, no run

Deception from Patterson! A back-of-the-hand slower ball, at just 104 kph, swinging away from the batter, on a fuller length. Matthew Short is beaten all ends up due to the lack of pace.

Ollie Patterson to Matthew Short, 4 runs

FOUR! That ball does not depend on ANY surface. Patterson goes for the outswinger, but cannot land the ball. It comes in as a full toss outside off and Matthew Short reaches out, to drive it through the covers, marking the first boundary of the chase. 117 more needed from 119 balls.

Ollie Patterson to Matthew Short, 1 run

WIDE! Not an ideal way to start for the debutant. He bowls it miles outside off, beyond the tramline. Probably trying to swing the ball back in, but he doesn't get any movement. Matthew Short liberates his arms to slap it through covers but misses.
