MS Dhoni, the captain of the 'Men in Blue', will now don the olive greens of the Indian Army as he is being given the honorary rank of an officer as a token of appreciation for his World Cup achievement.
Dhoni, along with Suresh Raina, was invited by Army Chief General VK Singh this evening for tea at his residence where he was given the offer, which he accepted, Army officials said here.
He was offered the honorary rank of an officer in the Territorial Army, they said, adding the rank to be given to him would be decided later.
During his interaction with the Army Chief, Dhoni said he had always wanted to join the Army and he had many friends in the Service.
Gen Singh complimented Dhoni for his leadership during the World Cup and the performance of the Indian team during the mega event.
Dhoni is the second cricketer after former all rounder Kapil Dev to have been given the honorary commission in the Territorial Army.
Kapil Dev has been given the honorary rank of Lt Col and takes part in various events to promote the Army among youth.
The Territorial Army is part of regular Army and its present role is to relieve it from static duties and assist civil administration in dealing with natural calamities and maintenance of essential services in untoward situations.
On Monday, Dhoni had met IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal PV Naik and was offered a flight in the frontline Su-30MKI air superiority fighter jet.
