England leads by 172 in 1st test against Pakistan

Pakistan avoided the follow on but was bowled out for 182 by England on Saturday on the third day of the first test.

England leads by 172 runs at Trent Bridge after Pakistan resumed on 149-7 in reply to the hosts' 354, needing 8 to ensure the English batted next.

Umar Gul was Pakistan's top scorer with a spectacular unbeaten 65, including eight fours and four sixes.

Gul took Pakistan past the follow-on target with 18 off Finn's second over, but the innings ended in the 54th over when Mohammad Asif was run out by Eoin Morgan.

James Anderson took 5-54 and Finn 3-20.
