England lose their third wicket

A horrible mix-up and Moeen Ali is run put. Buttler declined the run when Moeen was well past the halfway mark of the pitch. McCoy collected the throw and broke the stumps comfortably. England have now lost their third wicket inside the powerplay

England lose their second

Hosein has dismissed Bairstow for just 9 off 6. Carefully dragged his length back as Bairstow reached out to drive the ball. It took a thickish inside edge and landed safely into the hands of the bowler. Some silver lining for West Indies?

Oct 23, 2021, 21:22:40 IST

Rampaul strikes early

Finally, something for West Indies in the game. Roy has been deceived by the slower delivery from Rampaul and he chipped it straight to Gayle at short mid-wicket. He departs for just 11.

Perfect start from England

Buttler punched through the cover in the fourth ball of the chase to score a boundary before throwing his hand at a widish delivery from Rampaul to cut through backward point for another boundary. Roy joined his partner to smash a six against Hosein in the third over as England amassed 21 runs at the end of three overs.

59 dot balls - a record, eh?

West Indies faced 59 dot balls today in the 86 deliveries they faced. That's the second-lowest for the team in World T20, after 65 dots during a game against India in 2014. Windies had scored 129/7 in the game before losing by seven wickets.

West Indies 55 all-out!

Rashid finishes with his career-best bowling figures, 2.2-0-2-4 as West Indies lose their final wicket to register their second lowest T20I score and lowest in World T20.

Back-to-back wickets for Rashid

With Pollard's dismissal, Windies' final batting hope ends. Pollard looked to clear the rope, but the ball landed safely into the hands of Bairstow in the deep. Obed McCoy followed the captain, departing for a golden duck. Windies now 9 down in 12.2 overs

Oct 23, 2021, 20:32:46 IST

Unwanted record awaits

West Indies' lowest T20I score is 45, against England in 2019. In T20 World Cup, they have never been folded for a score less than 100, their lowest being 101, against Sri Lanka at the Oval in 2009.

Oct 23, 2021, 20:27:06 IST

Trouble, trouble, trouble!

What is going on in Dubai! Returning just after the drinks break, Rashid dismissed Russell for a duck. Windies now 7 down for just 44.

Oct 23, 2021, 20:24:50 IST

Drinks break!

England have been absolutely spot on with their bowling changes, match-ups and fielding as well. West Indies, on the other hand, have looked in complete disarray, losing six wickets inside 10 overs for just 44 runs.

Mills picks his second wicket

England are not even celebrating now. Pooran's horrid run with the bat continues as he manages to score just one run in nine deliveries before nicking off to Jos Buttler.

West Indies 42/6 in 8.5 overs

What a catch!

Bairstow takes a stunning low catch at point, unrealistic though, as Bravo becomes the fifth batsman to depart.

Windies in deep trouble!

They have now lost their fourth wicket as Gayle departs for 13 off 13. Mills' extra pace down the magic and Gayle is absolute disappointed with his dismissal.

Moeen strikes again!

Three wickets have fallen in the powerplay and Moeen has picked up two of them. Hetmyer, who already hit two boundaries, looked to take on Moeen, but mistimed his shot. He walked back in disappointment as West Indies now go three down.

Windies lose both openers early

Windies in trouble early on as they have lost their second opener in a space of just four deliveries. Simmons shimmied down to slog the delivery from Moeen straight to the fielder at deep mid-wicket.

Early breakthrough for England

A slower delivery from Woakes and Lewis looked to launch it high over the bowler's head, but it only took the bottom of the bat. Moeen Ali grabbed it comfortably in the deep. And early breakthrough for England.

West Indies 9/1 in 2 overs

Captains speak

Kieron Pollard. We would have bowled. Russell is fit. First World Cup for Pooran, McCoy. Akeal Hosein gets an opportunity as well. With the combination of our team we do not depend on Russell bowling 4 overs every game. We have an all-round team. Just a matter of us coming together and playing. Chris Gayle, legend for us. He has been around for 20 odd years. He has done a lot for west Indies in all three formats. He has done justice to himself. Looking forward to what we can do as a team more than individuals.

Eoin Morgan: Short side one side. And we can guard ourselves a bit with that dew factor. Missing out are Billings, Willey, Curran, Wood... Wood and Curran needed a bit more time to recover after the injuries in the warm-up games. Tymal Mills is playing. He was excellent for us before. We get balance with Liam and Moeen, so gives us three seamers and three spinners. Obviously missing those all-rounders who aren't here hurt us. We are excited about the start of our campaign tonight.

Oct 23, 2021, 19:12:51 IST

Tymal Mills back!

The last time Mills played for England in the T20I format was back in 2017, against India in Bengaluru. This year in T20s, he has picked 25 wickets in 19 innings at an economy rate of 7.32 and at a strike rate of 14.7.

TOSS TIME

England have won the toss and have opted to field against West Indies

Oct 23, 2021, 19:00:33 IST

Will Andre Russell be fully fit for the opener?

He did return to action in the warm-up game against Afghanistan picking 1/13 in two overs and scoring 11 off 16.

"He played in that warm-up game a couple of days ago and it was just like a trial for him because he hasn't played a cricket match in about three-four weeks, so there's still some rust there for him, still need to be a bit confident in his mind. But I'm sure even yesterday and a couple of days before that, he's been working tirelessly behind the scenes to be fit," said Pollard.

Oct 23, 2021, 18:52:15 IST

Will Eoin Morgan drop himself?

In 15 innings in IPL 2021, Morgan has scored at a strike rate of 95.7 to amass 133 runs and was dismissed for a duck four times. For England, he only managed 49 runs in four innings in the T20Is against Pakistan and Sri Lanka during the summer.

"It's always something I've said, that [being dropped] is always an option," he said. "I'm not going to stand in the way of the team winning the World Cup. Obviously, I've been short on runs, my captaincy has been pretty good as it goes. But yeah is the answer."

Oct 23, 2021, 18:46:48 IST

Gayle's form a worry?

The T20 legend has managed only 227 runs this year in the international format, at 7.02 runs per over, almost 1.34 runs less per ball than his career rate. In IPL 2021, he scored 193 runs in 10 innings at 21.4 and at a strike rate of 125.3, his lowest returns since 2017.

Oct 23, 2021, 18:39:48 IST

West Indies 5-0 England

West Indies have won all their five meetings against England in T20 World Cups with victories coming in 2009, 2010, 2012 and twice in 2016 which includes that final. Overall, Windies have won 11 T20I matches against England, but Eoin Morgan's men have won three of their last four meetings since the Brathwaite show.
