England vs West Indies 3rd test, Day 1 highlights: Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler made their first big scores of the series in putting on an unbeaten stand of 136 runs to rebuild England’s innings against the West Indies and put the hosts on top on day one of the deciding test at Old Trafford on Friday. England recovered from 122-4 just before tea to close on 258-4, with Pope on 91 as he goes in search of his second test century and Buttler on 56.Follow updates from England vs West Indies, 3rd Test, Day 1:

Stumps on Day 1
Bad light has been offered to England batsmen and they have happily taken it. So that’s it then England 258/4 at Stumps on Day 1. What a recover from England. It looked all pale for them when Rory Burns was dismissed for 57 a few minutes before Tea but since then Buttler (56) and Pope (91) have batted out of their skins to ensure no further damage in the last session.

FOUR! What a shot that was from Ollie Pope. Roach got it to tail back in with second new ball, Pope covered the swing and played the most delightful on-drove you’ll see. That shot takes him into the nineties.

Fifty for Buttler
Fifty for Jos Buttler, a much-needed one for him, much-needed one for England. Roston Chase pitches it outside off stump, driven through covers, Buttler came back for a couple to bring up his 16th fifty in Test cricket. Big applause form the England dugout.

Two fours on either side of this over. One from Buttler at the last ball of Chase’s over and another one from Pope off the first ball off Rahkeem Cornwall’s next over. The West Indies spinners are leaking runs.

West Indies lose their 2nd review
Pope was hit on the front pad and then the back leg by this turning flighted delivery, it did turn a decent amount to seed a doubt in umpire Richard Kettleborough’s mind. He thought and said no. West Indies reviewed as it was close, interestingly it wasn’t even umpire’s call and clearly missing leg stump. Pope’s big stride saving him there.

SIX! Second one of the over and this time bigger and with better conviction from Buttler. This is where he can be dangerous. This is what has been missing in the last few Test matches but what a time to get it back, series on the line, team in trouble and Buttler is standing up. Some thinking to do for Jason Holder.

SIX! Jos Buttler slowly but surely finding his touch. A flighted delivery on around middle stump from Cornwall, Buttler gets a good stride in and just launches it over mid-wicket for the first maximum of the match.

Pope once again hits Gabriel for two fours in the over. Ever since that little injury early on in the day, Gabriel hasn’t really looked at his best and Pope is making it count. Runs are flowing freely for the first in this Test match for England. They are 184/4

FOUR! Pulled away for four. OlliePope collects his second in the over of Gabriel. Gets into position quickly, rocks back in the crease and pulls the short ball through mid-wicket. Looked a boundary the moment it left his bat.

Umire’s call on wickets hitting, so Ollie Pope survives and West Indies retain their review tooo. Ollie Pope was beaten on his flick as the ball seamed into the batsman, struck in line, but it was high enough to save the batsman

Pope rides his luck
Great effort their from Roston Chase but even that is not enough to grab that catch. It just lands away from his outstretched hands. A shortish delivery, Pope sort of gets into a tangle. In the end he gets a top edge which could have easily landed on a fielder’s hand.

Buttler drives
FOUR! Splendid shot from Buttler. This should give him a lot of confidence. Holder pitches this one up around off, and although there’s a hint of outswing, Buttler connects his off-drive to perfection. No chance for the mid-off fielder and it races away to the boundary.

Holder has bowled two maidens and West Indies have given away just 7 runs in 4 overs after Tea. The squeeze is on here, Pope and Buttler have somehow got to battle through all this.

They lost two important wickets that of Ben Stokes and Rory Burns. West Indies have also managed to keep the scoring rate under control, it will be an interesting final session where West Indies will look get into the England tail.

Terrible terrible call to go for that single. It was just a tap towards the mid-on from Pope, Chase closed in to the ball very quickly, Pope was never going to make it unless a fumble from the fielder and Chase did exactly that. He already got Root run out in the morning but not this time. Pope survives.

Burns turning out to be Chase’s bunny
This is the fourth time Roston Chase has got Rory Burns out in this series. It is safe to say the West Indian off-spinner has got the number of Burns. 40 balls he has bowled to Burns, has given away only 15 runs and has got him out four times.

A shortish delivery from Chase, Burns goes for the cut like he was been doing all day but this time the bounce does him, he gets an outside edge, Cornwall at first slip, sticks his right hand out to grab a screamer, that was travelling, those big hands of Cornwall definitely helped. FOUR! Some timing there from Pope. It was just a nudged through midwicket with just a gentle push, but it’s timed it races away to the boundary.

FOUR! A gift from Cornwall, it was short, it was wide, perhaps the worst delivery that the big man has bowled today and Burns, just after getting to his fifty, won’t gonna miss out on an opportunity like that. He rocks back and smacks it past point for a boundary.

Rory Burns gets to his fifty with a tap to fine-leg. A very good innings from the left-hander. He has looked solid against both the seamers and spinners. 18th fifty of his Test career and he gets there off 126 balls. England would like to believe, he’s warming up for a hundred.

Good use of the feet from Pope. He dances down the track, reaches the pitch of the ball flicks it into the vacant area. The long boundary will allow them comeback for three, that also brings up England’s 100.

Ollie Pope is the new man in. He is short of runs and needs to get some under his belt. Burns needs to take the senior partner’s role here. Just Buttler to follow before the all-rounders come in.

Clean bowled
OUT! What a delivery from Kemar Roach. A bullet delivery goes past Stokes’ defence. That seemed like a great set up. Two short deliveries rattled Stokes a bit and then he bowls quick one fuller in length. Stokes had no footwork there and the ball rattled the stumps. Big wicket for West Indies, England 92/3 as Stokes departs for 20.

Roach rattles Stokes’ helmet
Kemar Roach bowls a nasty bouncer that climbs on Stokes who was looking to play a glorious pull shot. Roach got excited and appealed after the bal was caught by Dowrich. Turned down by the umpire and Holder wasn’t interested in a review and rightly so.

Cornwall back in the attack
Rahkeem Cornwall is back in the attack. The burly off spinner got a few to turn in his first spell. He bowls a tidy over, giving away two singles. Quite an attack field for Cornwall, with two slips in place. He is bowling round the wicket to the left handers, needs to chance the line from middle stump and should look to pitch it on off and get it to turn away. A little more flight will get the drive in the picture and that’s how he can get the outside edge.

Holder pitched that short and Burns pulled that for a triple. Another single comes for the over as Stokes continues to chip away. Burns looks tight in defence today and the runs will help his confidence.

A firm punch through the off-side from Burns, he will comeback for a couple, that takes him into the 40s. The left-hander has not put a foot wrong in this innings and it is now time for him to cash in on the start.

FOUR! Positive start after lunch by Burns. First ball after lunch, a sort of loosener outside off stump, Burns gets on top of it and stroke it through the off side for a boundary.

FOUR! Everything right about that shot from Stokes. He gives the off-spinner a charge, gets to pitch of the ball and just strokes it past the mid-on fielder, whose dive was not enough, for a boundary.

Joe Root is run put for 17, England lose their second. This is a huge moment in the game. Root had just started to look comfortable. Brilliant bit of fielding from Chase there. A shortish delivery from Cornwall, Burns taps it towards point. Root was not even ready for a quick single but god knows why agreed to go for it. Chase picked it up cleanly at backward point and nailed the bails down. England 47/2

A fit-again Shannon Gabriel has come back into the attack. He had walked off the field in the middle of his fourth over. He has welcomed by Burns with nice punch through covers for a couple.

The big man completes his second over and there has been at least two occasions, where he has got some genuine turn from the good part of the pitch. Encouraging signs for West Indies, England 27/1 after 16 overs.

13 overs into Day 1 and Holder has thrown the ball to his specialist spinner Rahkeem Cornwall. He might have a role to play as the Test match progresses but I’m not too sure about his effectiveness now.

FOUR! Cracking shot from Rory Burns. Slightly over-pitched from Roach, Burns gets a good stride in and drives it through the covers and the it had enough to beat the fielder, the first boundary of the day.

Back to back maidens from the West Indian captain. He is accurate and miserly as always. England are 14/1 after 9 overs, looks like Roach will continue from Gabriel’s end.

Gabriel walks off
This is not good for West Indies. Gabriel who was into only his fourth over of the day, stopped mid-way in his run up and decided to walk off. West Indies are playing only three seamers in this Test as Joseph has been replaced by off-spinner Cornwall. Gabriel has had troubles with his fitness in the past, they would hope it’s nothing serious. Meanwhile, Roach will complete the over.

This is the first boundary of the day and it will go down in the extras column. Gabriel slips down the leg side, and Burns simply steps across and lets it fly away for four byes, past the right glove of a desperately diving Dowrich. England into the double figures. England 11/1 after 6 overs.

Impact outside the line, West Indies lose the first of their reviews, you can’t blame them for going for it. It was Root after all, and it did appear close in the naked eye. Roach got this one to bring back in from length, Root got late in bringing his bat down and the ball thudded onto his front pad, thankfully the decent stride forward took him outside the line.

A juicy half-volley on the pads and England captain Joe Root is away with the nice flick shot past square leg. The outfield is not lightning, the timing wasn’t perfect to be fair. Root and Burns have run three.

OUT! Roach strikes in the first over. Dom Sibley misses a straight one.The ball didn’t straighten that much to be honest, Sibley just played down the wrong angle, playing all across it. There was no doubt in the umpire’s mind, Sibley had a quick chat with the non-striker and off he went. England 1/1 after 1 overs.

A new Richards-Botham trophy will be up for grabs when England and West Indies next meet in a Test series as the teams pay homage to two of their greatest cricketers. The title honours West Indies batting great Viv Richards, who scored more than 8,500 runs in a 121-Test career, and England all-rounder Ian Botham, who recorded more than 5,000 runs and took 383 wickets in 102 Tests appearances.
