India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 Highlights: Pat Cummins and Scott Boland took three wickets each while Nathan Lyon took two as Australia wiped off seven wickets in the third session and won the epic fourth Test by 184 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal's long stay in the middle was ended by Australia captain Pat Cummins and that has exposed India's tail. Washington Sundar is the last recognised batter out there. Jaiswal absorbed 208 balls for his 84 runs before going for a hook shot and perishing rather controversially. Rishabh Pant earlier showed in the second session that he can drop anchor when needed but then ended his great act of resistance in the most horrible way early in the third session. Pant went for a big shot out of nowhere against Travis Head and ended up being caught in the deep. That ended an 88-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal which lasted 197 balls. Ravindra Jadeja then fell to Scott Boland and Nitish Kumar Reddy to Nathan Lyon in the over after that....Read More
Pant and Jaiswal ensured that India lost no wickets in the second session after three fell before Lunch. Jaiswal started the session aggressively and there was an over against Nathan Lyon in which he got away with trying to hit him out of the park and failing. But the young opener has largely been India's anchor throughout the day after Australia set them a target of 340 to chase. Pant and Jaiswal's resistance in the second session meant that Australia went back to the dressing room at Tea rather frustrated.
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul earlier fell in the same over to Pat Cummins shortly after the drinks break in the first session of Day 5 of the 4th Test between India and Australia at the MCG. Rohit and Jaiswal dealt with some utterly unplayable deliveries from Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and later Scott Boland but the Indian openers were a picture of concentration as they survived the early pace salvo. Rohit in particular looked far better than ever on this tour but fell for just nine runs off nine off 40 balls. India are chasing a target of 340, much higher than the record for the highest succesfull Test run chase at the MCG which was set all the way back in 1928.
It was Jasprit Bumrah once again for India at the start of the day. Mohammed Siraj bowled the first over of Day 5 and then Bumrah took just four balls to uproot Nathan Lyon's middle stump and end his extraordinary last wicket stand with Scott Boland. Australia were all out for 234 in their second innings.
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: On we go to Sydney...
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Well, another disappointing collapse from India either side of a valiant act of resistance from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant in the second session. Both those batters ended their innings in utterly avoidable circumstances, as did Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. There are bound to be serious questions on the Test futures of both latter batters if they fail again in Sydney. Australia, meanwhile, ensure that they won't lose a series to India for the first time since 2015. They now need to either draw or win the last Test to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade. India have fought back valiantly on a number of occassions but the lack of an effective bowler apart from the genius that is Jasprit Bumrah, muddled team selections and perenially out of form top order batters have led to them being almost always behind Australia since the Perth Test. At the end of it all, though, it has made for some great viewing. This match in particular has been an epic, with Cummins stating it was probably the best he was ever involved in. Surely, surely the New Year's Test is going to be the same if weather permits. See you January 3 now!
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Pat Cummins is also the player of the match
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: He scored 49 in the first innings and took 3/89, then scored 41 in the second innings and took 3/28. A gist of what he said: "What an amazing Test match, I reckon one of the best I've been part of," he says. "All week the crowd has been ridiculous, and it's been amazing to be part of. Marnus helped me out in that second innings big time, happy to contribute. Amazing innings from Steve, winning the toss, it wasn't easy on the first day, to get up to high 400s was terrific. We wanted to take an India victory out of the equation [on batting on and not declaring]. We had plenty of runs to play with, and as many helmets around the bat as we could. We put a lot of work into our lower-order batting, we work a lot on how best to bowl to the opposition batters firstly, but also how we can contribute with the bat. We were a bit behind on the over rate, so we thought, get Trav in there, it may help us out with that. [Smith] just showed how to bat on that wicket. He was brilliant, and some handy catches, sometimes that goes unnoticed in the slips. Very happy change room, we'll savour this for a little bit before we get to Sydney."
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Rohit Sharma said India intended to chase 340 down at the start of the day
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Presentation ceremony begins and Rohit Sharma is the first to speak being the losing captain. Here is a gist of what he said: "It is pretty disappointing. It's not that we went in with the intent of giving up the fight. We wanted to fight till the end and unfortunately we couldn't do it. It'll be tough to assess just the last two sessions. If you look at the overall Test match, we had our chances, but we didn't take them. We had Australia 90 for 6. We know things can get tough, but we want to play tough cricket from hard situations. I don't want to look at one situation. We were not good enough. I went back to my room and thought about what else we could have done as a team, but we threw everything we had, but they fought hard, especially that last-wicket partnership, which probably cost us the game there. We knew 340 wasn't going to be easy. We tried to set a platform and keep wickets in hand for the last two sessions, but they bowled perfectly as well. We wanted to go for the target, but we didn't set the platform from our side. There are ways to win games and we fell short in finding ways to win games. [On NKR:] He's coming here for the first time, these conditions can get really tough, but he showed great character, solid technique as well. He's got everything to be successful at this level, I hope he goes from strength to strength, and he's got all the backing from the team as well. [On Bumrah:] Absolutely brillaint, we've been watching him for so many years now, coming here and getting the job done. He's not a statistical person, just wants to play for the country and do well for the team, but unfortunately he's not got a lot of support from the other side."
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: THAT'S THAT! Australia beat India by 184 runs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Siraj is LBW, Nathan Lyon finishes the job. Australia cannot lose this series, they take a 2-1 lead and now need just a draw to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2015. Siraj reviews it as a formality and the replay show that he was plumb. This is an unbelievable performance from Australia, they took all of their chances, their fielding was absolutely on point today. After losing the last two series at home to India, they have finally ensured that they won't lose this one.
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: OUT! What a catch by Smith, India down to their last wicket
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Edged and gone! That died on Smith at first slip but he dove forward slightly to his right and takes it right off the ground. Bumrah walks, although the umpires send it upstairs to see if it has carried or not. It did and India down to their last wicket. A chorus of boos around the ground as Mohammed Siraj walks out.
Bumrah c Smith b Boland 0 (8)
India 155/9
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Last hour of play begins, 3 overs to go for the new ball…
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Second drinks break in the third session and minimum 15 overs or a full hour left in this match. Australia can fit in more if they go through with it quickly. Lyon to bowl the 78th over now, Sundar is on strike, Jasprit Bumrah at the other end. Bumrah has been India's saviour with the ball. Can he save them with the bat. Fielders swarming around the batter now, just the most gorgeous sight that is possible only in Test cricket.
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: OUT! Akash Deep is next to go, India down to last 2 wickets
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Once again a batter unhappy with the third umpire's decision, although only Akash Deep knows why that is the case. Boland with a length ball first ball of the 77th on leg stump, Akash Deep misses the flick, the ball pops up to short leg where Head takes the catch. Australia appeal, Wilson says no and Cummins review straightaway. This time snicko reflects a big deflection and so the third umpire asks Wilson to overrule his call again. Deep has a conversation with the umpire quite strangely, the Australians motion to him with wry smiles that they all heard two noises and later replays even show a red mark on the bat when the ball passes it.
Deep c Head b Boland 7 (17)
India 150/7 in 76 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Ex-umpire Simon Tauffel's view of the Jaiswal dismissal
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Tauffel says that the third umpire did make the right decision on that occasion. "With the technology protocols, we do have a hierarchy of redundancy and when the umpire sees a clear deflection off the bat there is no need to go any further and use any other form of technology to prove the case," he said.
About 18 overs left now for the day, Sundar and Akash Deep have dropped anchor. We are now in that zone where the batter is swarmed by fielders and runs have stopped making any kind of sense.
India 143/7 with 18 overs left, Australia need 3 wickets to win
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: GONE! JAISWAL GOES IN A CLOUD OF CONTROVERSY
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Well Jaiswal's resistance has always been a strange one. He kept going for a biggie out of nowhere now and then and was lucky to get away with them. Now, his luck runs out. He goes for a hook against Cummins, the umpire turns down Australia's appeal and Cummins reviews straightaway. Huge deflection in the replay off the gloves AND YET FOR SOME REASON THERE IS NO SPIKE ON THE SNICKO! Yet the deflection is there and the third umpire decides that the visual evidence is enough. He asks Joel Wilson to overturn his decision and Jaiswal is livid. He has a 10-second conversation with Wilson before walking off shaking his head. Jaiswal can be as annoyed as he wants but the fact remains that the third umpire is entitled to overrule snicko or any piece of technology if he sees clear evidence to make a decision through another. That was a huge deflection in slow-mo. Jaiswal could've tried to not go for that shot at all but that is a different discussion. Another disappointing end to a resilient knock. Like Rohit, Kohli and Pant, Jaiswal goes playing a shot when India needed to bat out a draw.
Jaiswal c Carey b Cummins 84 (208)
India 140/6 in 70.5 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: A wincing Mitchell Starc replaces Nathan Lyon
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Changes at both ends for Australia. Jaiswal sees off that over from Cummins, survives getting a big inside edge off the last ball. Now Starc is back for the 70th but he is stretching and feeling his sides and on his haunches before bowling his first ball.
India 138/6
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Pat Cummins back in the attack
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Cummins takes off Boland and brings himself on for the 69th over. Jaiswal will be on strike, he is on 82 off 197, just the most incredible act of resistance from the Indian opener already, regardless of what happens in this match. Sundar at the other end on two off 16.
India 138/6
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Drinks in the third session, India 138/6
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: There are a minimum of 25 overs remaining today. India need 202 to win but that is all academic now. They cannot go for the win and it will take a monumental effort to draw it. Jaiswal finished off the first session of the final session with an exquiste cover drive against Boland last ball of the 67th. He moves to 82 off 197, Sundar will face Lyon after the break on two off 10.
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Jaiswal trying to take out silly point!
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Well it is all down to Jaiswal really and he has gone for a couple of almighty heaves off Boland aimed at Sam Konstas standing right in front of him at silly point. Konstas does all kinds of weird things with his fingers while fielding as a bowler revs up. Wonder if that has bothered Jaiswal. If yes, then the question has to be asked: Why in the world? Jaiswal does block out the last two balls after those two heaves, he has played brilliantly so far for 76 off 191, why goe for those biggies, only he knows. Or maybe not. Washington Sundar at the other end on two off four, he will be on strike to Lyon and we are starting to see some funky field placements up close now. Silly point stays, a short square point and a short square leg.
India 132/6
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: OUT! Century in the first innings, one in the second for Reddy
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Nathan Lyon gets one, wickets in consecutive overs for Australia and now India, are down to their last recognised batter. Incredible bowling from the GOAT, tossed up around off and it takes Reddy's outside edge. Smith takes a sharp low catch at slips.
Reddy c Smith b Lyon 1 (5)
India 130/6 in 63.2 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: OUT! Now Jadeja goes, Boland gets one
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Oh a snorter from Boland, Jadeja bounced out. India have lost half their side all of a sudden. Jaiswal got off strike first ball of that over and then Boland jumps at Jadeja's neck from outside off. The batter fends it off, edge to the keeper.
First-innings centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy walks out now. There were a lot of celebrations around his century, but he now has to get his mind back in and do some hard-nosed Test blocking.
Jadeja c Carey b Boland 2 (14)
India 127/5 in 62.2 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: OUT! WHAT HAS PANT DONE! HEAD STRIKES!
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Wow, Pant's resolve breaks and Australia strike. Well apart from all the other reasons, Cummins may have also hoped in the corner of his mind that exactly this happens. Head bowls the fourth ball of the 59th short outside off, Pant goes for a big pull, couldn't get the distance on it. Good catch in the deep by Marsh; Pant looks absolutely forlorn as he walks off. That was just a horrible way to end a great act of resistance and it has given Australia an opening out of nowhere. Once again, it is Travis Head who does the job against India, and this time with the ball!
Pant c Marsh b Head 30 (104)
India 121/3 in 58.4 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Travis Head continues!
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Well this is quite strange and the only explanation can be that first of all Cummins is worried about Australia's over rate. Secondly, Starc's fitness is a concern and so Australia have to conserve their energies, with the best chance of wickets coming with the new ball. All this points to the fact that their task of winning this match is getting increasingly difficult. It is Lyon who bowled from the other end and Pant was beaten off the last two balls of that over.
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: All set for the final session of this epic contest
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: All right, this is what it comes down to. If Jaiswal and Pant get themselves in again in the next 15-20 minutes, one gets a feeling that Australia will have no choice but wait for the new ball to do some miracles. Get set for a right scrap now. It is going to be gritty, it is going to be ugly, it might be difficult to watch at times. But it is all good old fashioned Test cricket, probably very similar to how it was played back in the days when the England set the existing record for highest succesfull run chase at the MCG in 1928. For now, it's a mild start to the session from Australia, Travis Head has the ball in his hands.
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Ravichandran Ashwin takes a dig at “people who own fan clubs”
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: That Ravichandran Ashwin is watching this match is probably not much of a surprise. Ashwin's love affair will never go, in fact he also probably followed South Africa's incredible win against Pakistan just a few hours back. But well, he has had some interesting things to say on X.
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: TEA! India 112/3 in 54 overs, need 228 to win from a minimum of 38 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: A wicketless second session. Well for all the questions raised on Rishabh Pant's temperament, he has been the one who has shown more restraint in this session. Pant finishes that session with a strike rate of 30.10 after facing 93 balls. Pant has scored 28 of the most gritty runs. He needed to get a spray on that bicep that took the blow from Cummins. The last time India toured Australia, Pant was at the other end of the spectrum on the aggression scale to Cheteshwar Pujara. In this session, he has batted like Pujara. That is incredible restraint from the Indian wicketkeeper. At the other end, Jaiswal has had his fair share of luck and he had an over of madness which he survived against Lyon. Otherwise, he has been just incredible. He is batting on 63 off 159 balls.
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Pant gets a four!
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Right, his strike rate has gone above 30 with that. Pant blocks the first ball of Starc's second over of the spell back to the bowler. Then Starc bowls a yorker on Pant's legs but the latter has never been troubled by those in his Test career, tucks it away fine for a four. Starc induces a thick edge off the fifth ball that runs to deep third man and Pant takes a single. Jaiswal defends the last ball back to the bowler. He is on 63 off 159, Pant on 28 off 87.
India 112/3 in 53 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Mitchell Starc is back, AND CLUTCHING HIS BACK!
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Wow the Australians really have some injury worries to grapple with going into the final Test. Josh Hazlewood is out for the series, now Starc returns to bowl his 13th over and he clutches his back after sending in the first to Jaiswal. 50 overs have been done and India have scored 104 runs. We are seeing cricket from a different era here folks, soak it in. The T20 stuff is around the corner, and so savour the real stuff while you have it.
India 104/3 in 50 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Pant deals with some hostility from Cummins
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Pant has done a Pujara here, which is quite hard to believe. Cummins shortens his length and gives Pant some of the short stuff that he gave Reddy yesterday. He sends an awkward one for Pant third ball, he ends up taking it on the bicep. He blocks the next two balls down and then ducks for the last. Pant has scored just 18 off 69, a strike rate of less than 25. Jaiswal at the other end on 58 off 141 balls.
India 97/3 in 47 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Yashasvi Jaiswal survives three bad shots
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Sunil Gavaskar did NOT enjoy that in the commentary box. Jaiswal takes almighty swings at the fourth and fifth balls of Lyon's sixth over, mishits both of them and somehow, they don't go for a catch or chop on to the stumps. And yet, he goes for a big expansive drive last ball of the over, exactly what Lyon was inviting, beaten on outside edge.
India 95/3 in 44 overs
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: India now need 250 to win
India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Well this is quite a partnership. Jaiswal has scored 54 in 131 balls, Pant on 17 off 49 balls. 42 overs have been bowled so far and about 52 are left for the day. This is Test cricket and this excellent pitch is not as flat as the one that was there at the Gabba a few years ago for THAT Test. But hey, you never know. Cummins continues for the 43rd over, his 13th. Just one run off it for Jaiswal.
India 93/3 in 43 overs
