Both those batters ended their innings in utterly avoidable circumstances, as did Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. There are bound to be serious questions on the Test futures of both latter batters if they fail again in Sydney. Australia, meanwhile, ensure that they won't lose a series to India for the first time since 2015. They now need to either draw or win the last Test to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade. India have fought back valiantly on a number of occassions but the lack of an effective bowler apart from the genius that is Jasprit Bumrah, muddled team selections and perenially out of form top order batters have led to them being almost always behind Australia since the Perth Test. At the end of it all, though, it has made for some great viewing. This match in particular has been an epic, with Cummins stating it was probably the best he was ever involved in. A gist of what he said: "What an amazing Test match, I reckon one of the best I've been part of," he says. "All week the crowd has been ridiculous, and it's been amazing to be part of. Marnus helped me out in that second innings big time, happy to contribute. Amazing innings from Steve, winning the toss, it wasn't easy on the first day, to get up to high 400s was terrific. We wanted to go for the target, but we didn't set the platform from our side. There are ways to win games and we fell short in finding ways to win games. [On NKR:] He's coming here for the first time, these conditions can get really tough, but he showed great character, solid technique as well. He's got everything to be successful at this level, I hope he goes from strength to strength, and he's got all the backing from the team as well. [On Bumrah:] Absolutely brillaint, we've been watching him for so many years now, coming here and getting the job done. He's not a statistical person, just wants to play for the country and do well for the team, but unfortunately he's not got a lot of support from the other side."

Australia can fit in more if they go through with it quickly. Lyon to bowl the 78th over now, Sundar is on strike, Jasprit Bumrah at the other end. Bumrah has been India's saviour with the ball. Can he save them with the bat. Fielders swarming around the batter now, just the most gorgeous sight that is possible only in Test cricket.

Boland with a length ball first ball of the 77th on leg stump, Akash Deep misses the flick, the ball pops up to short leg where Head takes the catch. Australia appeal, Wilson says no and Cummins review straightaway. This time snicko reflects a big deflection and so the third umpire asks Wilson to overrule his call again. Deep has a conversation with the umpire quite strangely, the Australians motion to him with wry smiles that they all heard two noises and later replays even show a red mark on the bat when the ball passes it.

"With the technology protocols, we do have a hierarchy of redundancy and when the umpire sees a clear deflection off the bat there is no need to go any further and use any other form of technology to prove the case," he said.

India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Well Jaiswal's resistance has always been a strange one. He kept going for a biggie out of nowhere now and then and was lucky to get away with them. Now, his luck runs out. He goes for a hook against Cummins, the umpire turns down Australia's appeal and Cummins reviews straightaway. Huge deflection in the replay off the gloves AND YET FOR SOME REASON THERE IS NO SPIKE ON THE SNICKO! Yet the deflection is there and the third umpire decides that the visual evidence is enough. He asks Joel Wilson to overturn his decision and Jaiswal is livid. He has a 10-second conversation with Wilson before walking off shaking his head. Jaiswal can be as annoyed as he wants but the fact remains that the third umpire is entitled to overrule snicko or any piece of technology if he sees clear evidence to make a decision through another. That was a huge deflection in slow-mo. Jaiswal could've tried to not go for that shot at all but that is a different discussion. Another disappointing end to a resilient knock. Like Rohit, Kohli and Pant, Jaiswal goes playing a shot when India needed to bat out a draw.

They cannot go for the win and it will take a monumental effort to draw it. Jaiswal finished off the first session of the final session with an exquiste cover drive against Boland last ball of the 67th. He moves to 82 off 197, Sundar will face Lyon after the break on two off 10.

India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Well it is all down to Jaiswal really and he has gone for a couple of almighty heaves off Boland aimed at Sam Konstas standing right in front of him at silly point. Konstas does all kinds of weird things with his fingers while fielding as a bowler revs up. Wonder if that has bothered Jaiswal. If yes, then the question has to be asked: Why in the world? Jaiswal does block out the last two balls after those two heaves, he has played brilliantly so far for 76 off 191, why goe for those biggies, only he knows. Or maybe not. Washington Sundar at the other end on two off four, he will be on strike to Lyon and we are starting to see some funky field placements up close now. Silly point stays, a short square point and a short square leg.

First-innings centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy walks out now. There were a lot of celebrations around his century, but he now has to get his mind back in and do some hard-nosed Test blocking.

Well apart from all the other reasons, Cummins may have also hoped in the corner of his mind that exactly this happens. Head bowls the fourth ball of the 59th short outside off, Pant goes for a big pull, couldn't get the distance on it. Good catch in the deep by Marsh; Pant looks absolutely forlorn as he walks off. That was just a horrible way to end a great act of resistance and it has given Australia an opening out of nowhere. Once again, it is Travis Head who does the job against India, and this time with the ball!

India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Well this is quite strange and the only explanation can be that first of all Cummins is worried about Australia's over rate. Secondly, Starc's fitness is a concern and so Australia have to conserve their energies, with the best chance of wickets coming with the new ball. All this points to the fact that their task of winning this match is getting increasingly difficult. It is Lyon who bowled from the other end and Pant was beaten off the last two balls of that over.

If Jaiswal and Pant get themselves in again in the next 15-20 minutes, one gets a feeling that Australia will have no choice but wait for the new ball to do some miracles. Get set for a right scrap now. It is going to be gritty, it is going to be ugly, it might be difficult to watch at times. But it is all good old fashioned Test cricket, probably very similar to how it was played back in the days when the England set the existing record for highest succesfull run chase at the MCG in 1928. Well for all the questions raised on Rishabh Pant's temperament, he has been the one who has shown more restraint in this session. Pant finishes that session with a strike rate of 30.10 after facing 93 balls. Pant has scored 28 of the most gritty runs. He needed to get a spray on that bicep that took the blow from Cummins. The last time India toured Australia, Pant was at the other end of the spectrum on the aggression scale to Cheteshwar Pujara. In this session, he has batted like Pujara. That is incredible restraint from the Indian wicketkeeper. At the other end, Jaiswal has had his fair share of luck and he had an over of madness which he survived against Lyon. Otherwise, he has been just incredible. He is batting on 63 off 159 balls.

Then Starc bowls a yorker on Pant's legs but the latter has never been troubled by those in his Test career, tucks it away fine for a four. Starc induces a thick edge off the fifth ball that runs to deep third man and Pant takes a single. Jaiswal defends the last ball back to the bowler. He is on 63 off 159, Pant on 28 off 87.

He blocks the next two balls down and then ducks for the last. Pant has scored just 18 off 69, a strike rate of less than 25. Jaiswal at the other end on 58 off 141 balls.

Jaiswal takes almighty swings at the fourth and fifth balls of Lyon's sixth over, mishits both of them and somehow, they don't go for a catch or chop on to the stumps. And yet, he goes for a big expansive drive last ball of the over, exactly what Lyon was inviting, beaten on outside edge.

This is Test cricket and this excellent pitch is not as flat as the one that was there at the Gabba a few years ago for THAT Test. But hey, you never know. Cummins continues for the 43rd over, his 13th. Just one run off it for Jaiswal.
