Ishant Sharma on Thursday became the seventh Indian bowler to reach the milestone of 250 Test wickets, when he dismissed England Joe Root on the first day of the fourth Test match at Southampton.
Ishant, playing his 86th Test match, trapped Root in front of the wicket. He is the third Indian paceman after Kapil Dev (434 wickets) and Zaheer Khan (311 wickets) to reach the landmark.
The lanky paceman made his debut in May 2007 against Bangladesh in Dhaka. After spending most of his initial years in international cricket as a back-up fast bowler, Ishant came into his own in cricket’s longest format under the captaincy of Virat Kohli.
With Kohli stressing on the need to play with five front line bowlers to win Test matches and backing his bowlers to have an attacking mindset, the Delhi paceman started flourishing.
Ishant’s record in Test cricket since 2015 has been far better than his career records. He averages a healthy 28 plus and has strike rate of under 60, which are a testament of the improvement that his graph has seen in Test cricket.
