KL Rahul came in with the intention of playing his shots and while Mohammed Siraj eventually fell at the other end, he got to a sensational century with a six. He fell soon thereafter on 101 off 137 and that was the last Indian wicket to fall. The visitors were all out for 245. Mohammed Siraj then got an early breakthrough for India with Aiden Markram falling for five runs.
Dean Elgar and Tony De Zorzi then saw South Africa through to Lunch, at which point the hosts were 49/1 in 16 overs. De Zorzi and Elgar then made merry with India deciding to start with Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur in the second session. Elgar eventually raced past his half-century. The partnership was ended by Jasprit Bumrah who dismissed De Zorzi for on 28 off 62. Bumrah then dismissed Keegan Petersen immediately therafter but debutant David Bedingham has looked completely at home since. Elgar eventually reached his century while Bedingham scored at will and at Tea, the partnership between the pair was on 81 off 114. Elgar was on 115 off 168 while Bedingham was on 32 off 47. South Africa creamed 140 runs in the second session.
