Jonathan Trott top-scoredscored with 69 and stand-in skipper Eoin Morgan made 59 to hold England innings together as an Irish attack, led by John Mooney (3/32), restricted them to 201/8 in 42 overs after rain had shortened the game.

Ireland were then reduced to 97 for 7 in 20 overs with seamers Steven Finn and Jade Dernbach doing most of the damage sharing five wickets between them.

Kevin O'Brien, who had helped his side beat England in the World Cup, had thrown the gauntlet before the match, saying he would like to repeat the heroics from the World Cup. However, he had no clue to a fiery yorker from Dernbach, clocked at 90mph.
