Mumbai Police on Saturday recorded statements of the family members of Cricket Club of India (CCI) CEO Kamaljeet Rajpal, who allegedly attempted suicide after a court adjourned hearing on his anticipatory bail plea in a lewd e-mail case.

Rajpal, who is facing charges of sending an obscene email to a female committee member of the club in March 2007, allegedly shot himself in the head at his South Mumbai residence last night.

"It is too early to say whether he shot himself by accident or if it was a suicide attempt. Statements of family members have been recorded as part of the investigation. Also, no suicide note has been found," a senior police official from the Cuffe Parade police station said.

Rajpal was admitted to Bombay Hospital where a team of doctors operated on him last night.

"The bullet has damaged the front part of his skull and some portion of the brain as well. A team of neuro- surgeons had operated on him last night and his condition is still critical," the hospital spokesman said.

The CCI CEO has applied for an anticipatory bail in the email case and the Sessions Court would give its ruling on the plea on Monday after court adjourned the hearing yesterday.
