'Flight encountered a thunderstorm. I thought it would never land': India star recalls 'scary' experience in Australia
India scripted history by chasing down a target of 328 at the Gabba in final minutes of their riveting four-match Test series in Australia.
India claiming the Border-Gavaskar 2020-21 Trophy in Australia was a moment to remember for every fan. The visiting camp put up a display of great character and resilience, especially when people wrote India off after the Adelaide debacle. The side registered its lowest-ever score in the Test series opener after being bundled out for just 36. Injuries also thwarted India's hopes but they eventually managed to outwit a strong opposition. (Also Read | 'I haven't followed Waqar Younis. India scripted history by chasing down a target of 328 at the Gabba in the final minutes of their riveting four-match Test series versus Australia. A seven-wicket triumph, which was achieved with just 17 balls to spare, saw India retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a second straight series win in Australia.
Ashwin, who made headlines for his epic blockathon with Hanuma Vihari in the third Test, has recalled his 'scary' flight experience when the Indian camp flew from Melbourne to Sydney.
“We were flying to Sydney and the flight encountered a thunderstorm. It was so scary that for a moment, I thought that the flight would never land,” said Ashwin at the trailer launch of the documentary ‘Bandon Mein Tha Dum'.
Ashwin had even shared a tweet about the flight experience after landing in Sydney. "Yours Turbulently, Melbourne to Sydney! #ouch #scary"
Ashwin hit 39* off 128 balls at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) with Vihari, who notched up unbeaten 161-ball 23 as the two put up a vigilant stand to dash Australia's hopes of a win.
"We both got comfortable the instant we went in. We realised what problem we had, he could not come forward and be going on the backfoot. He was struggling from the hamstring injury. When I went to the crease I could not go forward against the fast bowlers. So in that situation, I said we will rotate and see how this will work," said Ashwin.
The seasoned tweaker grabbed 12 wickets to end up as India's second-highest wicket-taker in the series despite missing the fourth and final Test with a back injury. Ashwin also shared how he played the third Test with painkillers.
"It was surprising to me that I went bowling after the injury with painkillers. And bowled 13 or 14 over on the trot. It was so bad i was rolling on the floor because of the pain. My wife and kids helped me to stand and then the Physio came to check me. I went to the game crawling, but did my best."
