Lancashire's Rocky Flintoff scored 123 runs off 76 balls, marking his first senior century.
Rocky Flintoff has spent the formative years of his career negotiating a surname that carries enormous weight in English cricket. On Tuesday, the 18-year-old added a significant achievement of his own, smashing his maiden senior century for Lancashire during their One-Day Cup encounter against Somerset at Taunton.
The son of former England captain and talismanic all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, Rocky hammered 123 from only 76 deliveries as Lancashire amassed 443 for six from their 50 overs. He reached three figures in 65 balls, completing his first century in recognised senior cricket after previously registering hundreds for Lancashire’s Second XI, England Under-19s and the England Lions.
Andrew was one of the defining figures of England’s celebrated 2005 Ashes triumph and represented his country in 79 Tests, 141 ODIs and seven T20Is. Rocky has inevitably been compared with his father since emerging through Lancashire’s pathway, particularly because of his height, power and ability to clear the boundary with seemingly little effort.
He joined Lancashire’s system at the age of eight before signing his first professional contract in June 2024. Later that summer, at 16 years and 113 days, he became the youngest player to represent Lancashire’s first team when he made his List A debut against Kent.
Flintoff subsequently became Lancashire’s youngest County Championship debutant and recorded a previous senior-best score of 88 against Middlesex in the 2024 One-Day Cup.
His development has included several notable performances outside senior domestic cricket. He became England’s youngest Under-19 centurion with 106 against Sri Lanka in 2024 and later surpassed his father as the youngest player to score a hundred for England A or the Lions.
That Lions innings, 108 from 127 balls against a Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane, was played under Andrew’s watch as head coach. However, because the match did not carry first-class status, Tuesday’s innings was Rocky’s first hundred in his official senior career record.
Flintoff and Jennings punish Somerset
Somerset elected to bowl first, but Lancashire were given a solid platform by Keaton Jennings and Matty Hurst, who added 83 for the opening wicket. Hurst made 47 from 44 balls before being dismissed by Archie Vaughan.
Josh Bohannon and Marcus Harris departed without converting their starts, leaving Lancashire 138 for three in the 23rd over when Flintoff walked out at No.5. What followed transformed a promising innings into a monumental one.
Flintoff joined Jennings in a fourth-wicket partnership worth 214 from just 127 deliveries. Jennings contributed 105 from 66 balls to the stand, while Flintoff supplied 98 from 63 as Somerset’s depleted attack struggled to contain them. Jennings eventually departed for 156 from 127 balls, having struck 15 fours and seven sixes. Flintoff, two short of his century when the partnership ended, reached the landmark from his 65th delivery.
The teenager accelerated further after raising his bat, eventually falling for 123 from 76 balls after being caught by Vaughan off Migael Pretorius. His innings contained 10 fours and seven sixes, with 82 of his 123 runs coming in boundaries.
Lancashire’s lower order maintained the assault. Harry Singh struck 20 from 10 balls, Jack Blatherwick finished unbeaten on 32 from 10, and Arav Shetty added 11 not out from five as the visitors closed on 443 for six. For a young batter whose progress has frequently been described through his father’s achievements, the innings represented an important personal landmark. The Flintoff name may have opened the conversation, but Rocky’s first senior century ensured the performance belonged entirely to him.
