Strauss was named the England captain following the ouster of skipper Kevin Pietersen and coach Peter Moores after a public fallout between the two. With just six months to go for the five-Test Ashes series, Katich feels Strauss' brief stint as captain in 2006 against Pakistan will help him rescue English cricket out of the present crisis.

"I think he's shown in the past that when he's been given the reins he's done a good job and his form recently has been good, which is probably another big factor," Katich told Australian Associate Press.

"As a player, if you are confident in your own game it helps with your captaincy as well," he added.
