'Virat Kohli's best is yet to come': Ex-Pakistan captain makes unusual 'Kumar Sangakkara' claim on India star
The former Pakistan captain made a rather unusual remark on Virat Kohli as the Team India star gears up for a return to Test cricket against Australia.
Team India star Virat Kohli made an excellent return to form last year in the Asia Cup when he ended a long wait for an international century, smashing an unbeaten 122 against Afghanistan. Since then, Kohli had smashed three more tons – all in ODIs – and will be aiming at translating his consistent run in the longest format of the game. The former India captain had an indifferent outing in the side's previous Test series against Bangladesh; since then, however, Kohli smashed centuries against Sri Lanka and New Zealand and has the momentum with the bat.
As Kohli gears up for India's return to longest format of the game on February 9 (Border-Gavaskar Trophy), former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has made a rather unusual comment on the 34-year-old batter. Butt believes Kohli's is yet to unleash his “best” and drew a parallel to Sri Lanka's legendary former batter Kumar Sangakkara.
"Virat Kohli's best is yet to come," he said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel.
“He has become fluent but is not back in full flow. He had golden years in which he was unstoppable. When you look at Kumar Sangakkara's career, the way he played towards the end of it was just amazing. He didn't play in the same fashion when he was young,” said Butt.
Talking about the batter's workload management, Butt said that Kohli knows best about himself.
"In modern-day cricket, the excessive amount of international cricket takes a toll on a player. Smart players choose their format and focus on that. Once that happens, they can continue their class. So it's up to Kohli when it comes to deciding on his future. But I feel his best will come again," said the former Pakistan skipper.
India are the current holders of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and will be hoping to retain the title against Pat Cummins' Australian team. The first Test of the series begins in Nagpur on February 9.
