Trying to film and live-stream his journey while at the wheel proved fatal for a 28-year-old man, whose car fell into a deep gorge when he lost control while negotiating the sharp bends of Uttarakhand’s hill roads, police on Thursday said. His two friends were severely injured in the accident that took place on Monday, they said.

The heart-rending accident can be seen in the video found in a mobile phone recovered from the spot. The trio can be heard yelling “ohhh... we are going to die” as the driver loses control and the car falls into the gorge.

Deepu Kunwar (28), who was driving the car, was killed in the accident while his friends — 25-year-old Deepu and Sanju Singh (22) — were critically injured, Nainital Station House Officer (SHO) Vipin Chandra said.

As Kunwar was engrossed in making the video and streaming it live on Facebook, the car rolled off the road and fell into a ditch killing him. The accident occurred on Monday when the three friends were going from Nainital to Kaladhungi, the SHO said. The cause of the accident could be ascertained only after the video was found in a mobile phone recovered from the spot, the officer said.

Meanwhile, Nainital SSP Janmejay Khanduri urged people to avoid clicking selfies or making videos while driving. “We appeal to all persons to follow the safety norms and not put their lives at risk,” he said.

It may be noted that Uttarakhand has recorded several selfie-related deaths in the past too. In April this year, one Vishal Singh of Patel Nagar, Dehradun, died after suffering a fall when he climbed on the ISBT flyover to click a selfie. In February last year, a youth had died while taking a selfie near Kolhukhet on the Dehradun Mussoorie Road. A month before that, a girl fell in the Alaknanda river at Rudraprayag district while clicking a selfie, leading to her death.

In 2016, a 24-year-old girl had died after being drowned in the Song river at Maldevta in Dehradun while clicking a selfie.
