The special investigative team (SIT), investigating into the National Highway-74 scam, questioned two National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials on Saturday.
The probing agency, investigating the case for the last seven months, has quizzed more than 150 officials and farmers so far. Widening the probing, now the SIT team is focusing on NHAI officials. According to sources, NHAI officials paid compensations to the farmers only on revenue officials’ report. They neither conducted survey nor questioned excessive compensation to farmers before releasing the money, they said.
The SIT team had summoned project director Narendra Kumar and assistant project director PS Pandey of NHAI, Najibabad, on Friday.
According to sources, during questioning both the officers avoided many questions saying that they were not posted in Najibabad when the scam took place.
Commenting on the case progress, US Nagar senior superintendent of police Sadanand Date, who has constituted the SIT, said, “It will take a long time to complete the NH-74 scam’s investigation, but is going in right direction. Very soon NHAI officials of Rudrapur may be summoned for questioning.”
It may be recalled that 11 revenue officials and farmers, including two suspended provincial civil services (PCS) officers, have been sent to jail for their alleged involvement in the ₹300-crore NH scam. More than 150 revenue official and farmers have been questioned. The scam pertains to compensation provided to farmers in lieu of their land acquired by NHAI for the widening and strengthening of NH-74. Most of the acquired land was agricultural, but its use was changed to commercial and hefty compensation was paid to the farmers, incurring heavy losses to the government.
