Delhi: Girl with injuries to private parts dies in hospital, docs suspect sexual assault

The girl’s body has been sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital for autopsy. The family had also not filed any complaint till Friday evening.

A six-year-old girl admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) on Thursday with injuries to her private parts died on Friday. Doctors suspect the injuries could be due to sexual assault.

But Delhi police, while denying any sexual assault angle, said prima facie it appeared she died of severe infection.

The girl’s body has been sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital for autopsy. The family had also not filed any complaint till Friday evening.

MN Tiwari, deputy commissioner of police (outer) said: “Her preliminary autopsy report did not indicate sexual assault. We are waiting for the final autopsy report. The case was reported by the hospital authorities.” 

In a press statement, the hospital said the girl was taken to the emergency ward at 4 pm on Thursday and was bleeding. “The child was in a decompensated septic shock, a severe blood infection where the body is unable to maintain the blood pressure or functions of vital organs. She was in a multi-organ failure,” read the statement.

On Friday afternoon, Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal tweeted, “Met doctors in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital(SRGH). 6 year old’s medical reports reveal recto vaginal fistula which means tear in anal & vaginal region. Happens due 2 sexual assault. She appears to have died due 2 an infection from same. Police shud imm arrest perpetrator. Devastating! (Sic).”

A police officer said the girl’s family told them she was about to take an exam at school when she complained of severe pain in her legs.The school informed her parents who brought her back home and applied a pain relief balm.

“When the girl did not get any relief, her family members admitted her to a local hospital and after two days to another hospital. When her condition started deteriorating, she was referred to SRGH,” said the officer quoting the girl’s relative.
