A 45-year-old man was arrested by Delhi police’s special cell for allegedly smuggling fake currency worth Rs 3 lakh. Police said the seized notes with a face value of Rs 2,000 each were smuggled into India through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border of Malda, West Bengal.

“We arrested one Narender Singh near Red Fort Metro station on January 12 after receiving a tip-off that a key member of the fake note syndicate would come there to deliver a consignment. We seized 150 notes of Rs 2,000 face value kept in a bag,” said P.K. Kushwah, DCP (Special Cell).

All the seized fake notes are of fine quality and it is very difficult to distinguish fake notes from the real ones, Kushwah added.

The police seized 150 notes of Rs 2,000 face value.

During interrogation, it came to light that Singh had been smuggling notes and has past cases against him. He further told the police that after a brief lull in the first few months post-demonetisation, the supply of fake notes has picked up since the second half of 2017.

He added that there have been regular inputs about the syndicate smuggling fake notes into the country through border areas and surveillance was mounted on the movements of the identified members of this syndicate to collect requisite intelligence.

Singh is a resident of Imlota village in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district.
