Delhi Police arrested two men who robbed a driver in southeast Delhi’s New Friends Colony on Saturday night and then tried to mislead the police with a concocted story about their “stolen bag”.

After allegedly robbing a phone from Kamod Yadav, the two motorcycle-borne robbers — Arjun Singh and Chetan Kumar — realised that they had dropped a bag at the crime scene which contained Kumar’s identity card. To mislead the police, they then concocted a story under which they claimed Kumar had been mugged by two motorcycle-borne men who took his bag. They wanted police officials to think that the two robbers who struck Yadav, also stole Kumar’s bag.

“Fearing that the recovered bag could lead police to link the robbery to them, they themselves made a call to the police. Kumar claimed that his bag was snatched away by two men but eventually spilled the beans as he was questioned further,” said DCP (south east) Chinmoy Biswal.

After driving away, the robbers realised that they had a bag that they dropped at the spot they robbed Yadav. By that time, Yadav had picked it up and handed it over to the police.

“Since the bag had Kumar’s ID card, they came up with a plan that Kumar would call the police. Dropping Singh off near Modi Mill, Kumar went back to the crime spot and made a PCR call. He told the police that his bag was snatched away by two men on a two-wheeler. He wanted us to think that the two men who had robbed Yadav had robbed him as well,” said Biswal.

Kumar, on the other hand, was certain that Yadav would not be able recognise him as he was wearing a helmet at the time of the robbery.

Initially, police officials assumed that the same set of accused had robbed him as well as Yadav.

“We started questioning Kumar and asked where he was coming from and where was he headed to before the alleged robbery. His replies were inconsistent and when interrogated further, he admitted that he had concocted the robbery story. He also told us that his friend Singh was waiting near Modi Mill,” Biswal said.

A police team then went to Modi Mill and arrested Singh as well. Yadav’s mobile was recovered from them.

During interrogation, the duo revealed that Singh is a bodybuilder and needed money to pursue the sport professionally for which he started robbing people. Singh had also won an award in Mr Delhi in 2015-16 in Fitness Athlete category in a Body Building Championship.
