A 17-year-old girl was killed near a Rohini park allegedly by her school senior on Wednesday evening. Police claim that 19-year-old Sarthak Kapoor killed the girl as he did not like her speaking to other youths.

When the girl’s family could not trace her, the accused Sarthak Kapoor pretended to join the search for her in the neighbourhood, said Rishi Pal, DCP (Rohini). However, police found his behaviour suspicious and questioned him. Kapoor’s statements about Wednesday evening were found inconsistent. He later confessed to his crime and led the police to a spot near the park where the victim’s body was lying. He was subsequently arrested and sent to jail.

The victim was a bright student and had 10 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) in Class 10. Kapoor and the girl had studied at the same private school in Rohini until early this year when he passed out from Class 12. The girl was one year junior to him.

Kapoor was pursuing BCA from a private institute in Delhi after leaving school. The two had continued to speak to each other even after leaving school. “But of late, Kapoor had grown insecure and would often question her for speaking to any other youth,” an investigator said.

On Wednesday evening, he confronted the girl while she was going to a coaching centre in Rohini Sector 17, not far from her home.

“They went into a park where they had an argument. They then moved to a narrow bylane nearby where they were involved in a scuffle during which Kapoor caught her by the neck, killing her on the spot,” the DCP said.

Finding the girl lifeless, Kapoor panicked and rushed home, leaving her body on the spot.

Meanwhile, the girl’s father, who works at a bank, contacted Kapoor for his daughter’s whereabouts when she did not return home even by 8.30pm. Kapoor immediately called his school friends and together they launched a search for her. However, the needle of suspicion soon turned to him and he was questioned by the cops.
