A 55-year-old man and his 21-year-old son were killed and seven others were critically injured on Tuesday after two cars collided head-on with each other near Kalindi Kunj in south Delhi.

The two cars involved in the accident were identified as a rashly driven Mahindra XUV and a Maruti Suzu Celerio.

Police said the XUV’s driver was apparently driving at a speed of more than 100 kmph. They suspect that the driver might have lost control of the SUV either while avoiding a patch of bad road or while overtaking another vehicle. The XUV took a sharp right turn and collided with the Celerio coming from the opposite side on Kalindi Kunj-Jaitpur road.

“The impact of the hit was such that the front portion of both the vehicles were badly damaged. The Celerio car received the maximum impact. Its driver and other occupants were stuck between the seats and the dashboard. It took police personnel around half an hour to rescue the injured occupants using iron cutters,” said a police officer.

Those killed in the accident were identified as Triloki Nath Tiwari and his son Vikas Tiwari. The five injured in the Celerio were Triloki’s daughter Neha Tiwari, 18, son Abhay Tiwari, 14, nephew Rohit Tiwari, 19, relative Shubham, 22, and Vikas’s friend Sachin, 22. The car belonged to Sachin and he was behind the wheel when the accident took place, said Triloki’s relative Yogesh.

The XUV occupants were identified as Hari Om and Hansraj, both aged 25 years and residents of Faridabad. The duo survived because the safety air bags of the vehicle popped out and absorbed the impact of the hit.

Chinmoy Biswal, deputy commissioner of police (southeast), said the exact sequence of events that led to the mishap could not be ascertained as there were no eyewitness to the accident and all the injured persons were unfit to give statements.

“The accident spot suggested that the XUV came from the wrong side of the road and collided with the other car head-on,” said Biswal, adding they were waiting for the medical examination reports of both the drivers to ascertain whether they were drunk.

Police said the causalities would have increased had there been a delay in commencing rescue operations. The DCP said the staff of an emergency response vehicle (ERV), who were patrolling the Agra Canal road, heard the sound of collision and reached the accident spot within seconds. “The injured were first rushed to Apollo hospital from where they were shifted to AIIMS Trauma Centre,” he added.

A case of rash and negligent driving causing death and hurt was registered at the Jaitpur police station.

Police said Triloki worked as a security guard in Noida and was the only earning member in his family. Vikas was pursuing a lab technician’s course from a government hospital in south Delhi. He worked as a part time tutor and teach English to children in his neighbourhood.
