Though preliminary findings suggest Suchitra died of hanging, her family members claimed she was murdered. The police have initiated an inquest proceeding into the matter.
According to the police, Suchitra’s employer, a woman, was out with her family to celebrate her daughter’s birthday when the incident happened.
When she returned home around 7 pm, she found Suchitra hanging from the ceiling fan in their drawing room, police said.
“She said the domestic help had locked the door from inside. When she reached home, she rung the bell but no one responded. She reportedly called Suchitra on her mobile but she did not answer. She then asked a few labourers working at a construction site nearby to break open the door. When they went inside, Suchitra was found hanging in the drawing room,” a senior police officer said.
“Her employer then made a PCR call and informed Suchitra’s family in Rangpuri. We took her to the hospital and she was declared brought dead. Her body has been sent for postmortem examination,” he added.
After the incident, Suchitra’s family members staged a protest demanding a murder case against the employers.
“Suchitra was not depressed. There was no suicide note. It is clearly a case of murder. We have seen the body and there were blue marks on her neck and arms which shows that she was beaten, murdered and then hanged. The employer is just trying to pass it off as suicide,” a relative said.
The relative added, “Suchitra knew a secret of the employer and she feared she would tell it to her husband and so she was killed.”
The police said they do not suspect foul play. “The door of the house was locked from inside. The initial findings of the postmortem suggest she died of asphyxia. But we are not ruling out any possibility and will probe the matter from all angles. We are verifying all allegations,” a senior police officer said.
Suchitra had joined work six months ago and used to look after her employer’s 10-year-old daughter. Her employer’s husband stays in Pune and visits home once a month.
