Man arrested for smuggling guns into Delhi-NCR

Ajay Bhardwaj, 39, headed a gang that used to procure improvised sophisticated semi-automatic pistols from Dhar, MP, and sold them in Delhi and NCR.

The police recovered 20 improvised sophisticated pistols of .32 bore from Bhardwaj.

During an in-house study on growing use of sophisticated firearms in commission of robberies and extortion in Delhi and NCR over the past years, the police found out that in most cases illicit weapons were being manufactured in Khargone, Sendhwa and Dhar districts of Madhya Pradesh. These weapons were being smuggled into Delhi-NCR. A team of police officers was constituted to track the movement of these arms smugglers.

“This team collected data pertaining to the gangs operating in Delhi and NCR and travelled to UP, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh,” DCP (Special Cell) PS Kushwaha said.

On Friday, the police received information that Bhardwaj will visit east Vinod Nagar to deliver a cache of Dhar-manufactured semi-automatic weapons to a person. Accordingly, a trap was laid on NH-24 and he was overpowered.

During questioning, Bhardwaj told the police that he had been working for his brother, Prashant, the main receiver of these arms from Dhar. This consignment of illegal arms was to be supplied to the contact of Prashant, who is resident of Pandav Nagar, Delhi. He had previously supplied 5- 6 consignments of illegal weapons in Delhi-NCR to his brothers’ contacts.
