1,500 chargesheets against govt officials for graft by CBI

The CBI has filed nearly 1,500 chargesheets in different courts against various government officials for their alleged role in corruption in past three years, with the maximum of 645 chargesheets in 2009.

The CBI has filed nearly 1,500 chargesheets in different courts against various government officials for their alleged role in corruption in past three years, with the maximum of 645 chargesheets in 2009.

According to information given to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday by Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Prithviraj Chavan, out of the total of 1,486 chargesheets, 645 were filed in 2009, followed by 586 in 2008 and 252 between January and June this year.

"It is the responsibility of the administrative ministry to take a decision in the matter within prescribed time frame. In the event of any delay, the Central Vigilance Commission reviews such cases from time to time," Chavan said.

"The Commission holds regular review meetings with the Director, CBI at monthly intervals to review the progress of cases where sanction for prosecution is pending with the disciplinary authority concerned," he said.

The minister said in order to expedite the pending prosecution requests, the Central Vigilance Commission holds meeting with Secretaries of the Government of India's departments concerned where CBI investigated cases are pending for sanction for prosecution for over four months.
