The incident was reported from the Kabutar Market area near Jama Masjid at 2:30 a.m," said a senior police officer.

According to police, the car first hit another four-wheeler, a Santro, after which it ran over a pavement, crushing some beggars sleeping there and killing one. "The car is registered in the name of a Nai Sarak resident. We have registered a case and investigations are on," the officer said. Eewitnesses claimed that the driver of the car appeared to be in an inebriated state," he said.

The police said the deceased appeared to be in his late 40’s. While the identity of the victim could not be established, post-mortem examination of the body was conducted at a Sabzi Mandi hospital on Sunday.

In a similar incident, a 25-year-old biker died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka. "The victim has been identified as one Rajesh Kumar," said a senior police officer.
