200 volunteers turn up for Clean Ridge Campaign

Delhi's lungs just got an overhauling. On Sunday, a group of residents' welfare associations, non-governmental organisations and students got together to kick off a Clean Ridge Campaign.

Delhi's lungs just got an overhauling. On Sunday, a group of residents' welfare associations, non-governmental organisations and students got together to kick off a Clean Ridge Campaign.

More than 200 volunteers, including schoolgoers and college students, professionals and members of RWAs gathered to clean Buddha Garden and plant trees in the area.

"The Ridge area can be called the lungs of Delhi. If the city's lungs get clogged, Delhi will wither away. That's why we have got together to remove toxic waste such as plastic bags, sachets and thermocol from the area," said Neeraj Gupta, president of Rajender Nagar residents' welfare association (RWA).

"It took us about four hours to clean up the area. This campaign will help us go a long way in restoring the Ridge," Gupta added.

"We are going to make it a regular affair and ensure that we try and keep the area clean. We are also going to sensitise people not to throw garbage in and around this area, as it is detrimental to the health of the forest," added Gupta.

The campaign has been on for a week now.
