36 child labourers rescued in Delhi

Thirty six child labourers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal were rescued today from six garment factories in Seelampur and Usmanpur areas of north-east Delhi.

"These child labourers were rescued in a joint raid by NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Labour department, Delhi police, National Legal Services Authority and Delhi Legal Services Authority," police said.

Twenty eight child labourers from Bihar, seven from UP and one from West Bengal were rescued, they said.

The children were allegedly forced to work in poorly lit and ill-ventilated rooms and had to stay there itself, according to police.

One of the rescued children said he had been working for the past six months in a unit and was forced to work for 16-17 hours a day without any remuneration.

"Every month over 2,000 children are trafficked from different parts of the country to Delhi and over 500 child labourers rescued each month," Kailash Satyarthi, founder of the NGO said.

All the rescued children have been sent to an NGO under the orders of Child Welfare Committee and their repatriation formalities are underway, he said.
