Six Ring Roads have come up in Beijing in the last seven decades.

Each Ring Road was added to ease the pressure of the city’s traffic, which has ballooned over the years.
But Beijing’s Ring Roads have failed to address the traffic woes.
One reason for this is the phenomenal increase in private vehicles over the years.
As of 2007, private cars added up to about 80 per cent of vehicles on Beijing’s roads.
This, despite the fact that the government has taken a series of steps to check the increase in private vehicles.
In the run up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the government took a series of measures to unclog the city’s roads. These included banning private vehicles from roads on particular days of the week and slashing public transport fares.
With a population of 17 million, Beijing had 3.08 million registered motor vehicles as of 2008 — an average of one for every two families.
