86 child labourers rescued

Eighty-six child labourers, most of them trafficked from Bihar, were rescued by authorities from several zari units in south Delhi today.

Eighty-six child labourers, most of them trafficked from Bihar, were rescued by authorities from several zari units in south Delhi on Thursday.

The rescue operation was carried out in Khanpur locality by South Delhi District Task Force on Raid, Rescue and Rehabilitation and the Labour Department following a complaint by child rights NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA).

All the children, between 7 and 15 years in age, worked in zari units, BBA officials said. All of them belong to Bihar
except one, who is from Nepal.

Several zari unit owners and landlords have been arrested during the rescue operation.

All these children were brought to Delhi by touts or relatives promising education, but were forced to work without any wages being paid to them.
