881 candidates for 58 seats in UP polls

Of the 881 candidates left in the field to contest for the second phase of UP's assembly elections only 50 are women.

As many as 881 candidates are left in the field to contest the second phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections to be held for 58 seats April 13.

Of these, 831 are men and only 50 women. The elections will be held in western Uttar Pradesh, also called the sugar belt of northern India.

The region starts from Ghaziabad on the edge of Delhi and extends all the way to Bareily and Rampur on one side, Shamli, Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar bordering Harayna on the other and includes Aligarh, Hathras and Atrauli.

The highest number of candidates in any constituency in the second phase is 27 and is from Ghaziabad. Ghaziabad also has the highest number of 864,093 voters of all the constituencies on April 13. Morna has only 206,826 voters.

Four constituencies have nine candidates each: Sasni (SC), Aligarh, Agota and Hapur (SC). There are 10 constituencies where more than one women candidate is in the fray.

In five constituencies -- Iglas, Hastinapur (SC), Siwalkhas (SC), Charthawal (SC) and Harora (SC) -- there are three women candidates each.

No constituency will witness any straight contest.

The Election Commission has identified 29 constituencies in the second phase as sensitive. It has deployed 18,400 electronic voting machines for 15,987 polling booths.
