The new applications system seems to have brought about an increase of 70% in the number of applications in the people with disability category at Delhi University this year.
While last year, the number of applications was only 520, this year it has increased to 900.
According to university officials, this has happened because of the new application process that made it possible for aspirants to apply online.
Earlier, all aspirants with disabilities would have to come to the university to get themselves registered centrally. This year, the process was scrapped and all aspirants were asked to fill the common OMR form or the common online form.
“The online application option was appreciated by many, especially those with locomotor disabilities, as they did not have to come to the university to fill the form,” said an official.
The increase in the applications, however, still leaves a lot to be desired. The university has around 1,600 of all its seats reserved for applicants with disabilities. All of these seats have never been filled.
“All the applicants who have applied will get a seat if they are flexible about the choice of college and course. The problem is that all of them want admission in the north campus colleges, even if they reside in the other end of the city. That is not something we can assure. This year the colleges have come out with their own cut-offs for applicants from all categories, that give students from any category the chance to pick and choose a course. Applicants should certainly use this facility,” the official added.

{{/usCountry}}A number of candidates, however, are also facing problems because of decentralisation.
“We have got a number of cases in which students from this category are not aware of the cut-off and have no idea how to go about the admission process. Each college is supposed to have help desks and NCC cadets helping out these applicants but most colleges have no arrangements at all,” said a teacher at Shri Ram College for Commerce.
