Inspired by Bollywood movies, he sent out two threat letters to his employer as dacoit Khatial Singh Yadav and demanded Rs 20 lakh as “protection money”. When he realised that money was not coming his way, he faked his own kidnapping. He was arrested when he came to collect the extortion money at Buddha Garden in west Delhi on Sunday.

His employer, Gulshan Lamba who is a businessman from Kirti Nagar, complained to the police about two letters -- received on September 29 and 30 -- written by dacoit Khatial Singh Yadav demanding Rs 20 lakh.

“The businessman reported the matter to us and we registered a case. The letters said if the demands were not met, then there would be an explosion at his office,” said Sharad Agarwal, DCP (west).

When Kumar saw that Lamba had no intention of paying the extortion money, he staged his own kidnapping, said the police. “He stopped coming to work from October 5. A day later, he called up Lamba from his mobile phone and informed him that he has been kidnapped. He told Lamba that the kidnappers would kill him if he did not pay the ransom amount,” said Agarwal.

He called up Lamba once again on Sunday and asked him to come with the extortion money to Buddha Garden. The police laid a trap and arrested him.

“He said he was inspired by movies to commit the crime. He said he got married a few months ago and wanted money to impress his wife,” said Agarwal.
