A condom slap for all who stare

A new women’s safety movement is fast gaining popularity for handing over condoms to embarrass men who stare, snide and stalk.

Over the past few weeks, a certain page on Facebook has been getting a lot of attention — 350 likes since it was started late last month, shares on various profiles, and a topic of discussion among young college-goers and professionals. The page is called Gift a Condom.

Created by 29-year-old Siddhartha Varma, who is into corporate communications, it describes itself as ‘To a**holes who stare, pass remarks and outrage the modesty of a women, even people who stalk on facebook so they don’t reproduce a**holes like themselves! I suggest we post pictures, screen shots etc to make our society a much safer place for women.’

“The thought came when I asked my little sister what she wanted on Raksha Bandhan. And that’s when I felt that considering the current scenario, the best gift I can give her is a safe environment. There are so many incidents ... my fiancée recently went out with friends and they got stalked. On this page, people are posting real-life incidents and screenshots of (vulgar) messages that people send to girls on Facebook,” says Varma. And true to what he says, many women have shared on the page screenshots of obscene messages they received from men on Facebook.
