A politically incorrect stretch

The fiasco has now acquired political overtones in the election year. The state Congress leadership has received feedback that if the mess is allowed to persist, it may adversely affect the prospects of the party in the south Delhi Assembly constituencies.

The BJP has already planned to intensify its stir. Candle light vigil on the stretch and sloganeering have already taken place and they found sympathisers. Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan has said if the party were voted to power in the Assembly elections later this year, it would scrap the project.

Well-placed sources in the Congress said some south Delhi MLAs have already met DPCC president JP Aggarwal and apprised him of the political fallout of the matter in south Delhi. They want Aggarwal to intervene in the matter on behalf of the party and talk to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on the issue. Aggarwal did not want to comment on the issue.

Some party leaders are also floating “conspiracy theories” saying that the BRT stretch was conceived to bring down the property price.
