After having improved its Board exam results phenomenally, government schools in the Capital are now keen on students etching an equally impressive performance graph in life after school as well.
To achieve this, the Directorate of Education has launched a first-of-its-kind initiative that will coach Class XII students aspiring to appear for competitive exams. And these classes are free of cost.
Titled Pahal, this initiative had a quiet launch last year. Special coaching classes under this programme were started on November 15.
“Our students are intelligent but lack direction. Pahal was conceived with the aim of helping them be better prepared for several competitive exams which one is nowadays expected to take to secure admission to any professional course,” said
Chandra Bhushan Kumar, director (education).
“The students are being prepared to crack sections on English proficiency, quantitative analysis, reasoning and general awareness. These sections are common to almost all common entrance examinations. As of now, we have published two books — one on reasoning and the other on English — and will soon have texts for students preparing for engineering and medical exams. The material for the classes has been developed by a team of about 15 government school teachers,” added Kumar.
The first phase of Pahal, which concludes on January 10, was started with 17 centres, 34 teachers and 450 students. The programme has acquired a larger scale since its launch and now has 1,500 students and 51 teachers teaching across 127 centres. All classes are conducted after school hours.

{{/usCountry}}“Before launching it, the directorate conducted a test to assess how our students would perform in a competitive exam. Over 85,000 students from government schools across the Capital appeared for it and more than 11,000 scored above 40 per cent despite negative marking. The result was encouraging and strengthened the government’s resolve to coach the students,” said Anil Kumar, principal, Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya, Shalimar Bagh, which is running a Pahal centre within its premises.
The second phase of Pahal will start soon after the Board exams end in April.
