More than 10, 000 workers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will go on a mass strike on Friday if administration fails to revise their allowances.

The 10,000 workers which includes technicians, operation theatre staff and paramedical staff going on a strike would mean paralysing the functioning of the country's largest medical institute which receives more than 10,000 patient footfalls daily.

"We had asked for a revision in our allowances. The standing finance committee, which met on Tuesday, decided only in favour of the faculty and senior administrative staff, which is not fair," said Satya Prakash Kalia, president, Karamchari Union at AIIMS. "We always get a raw deal. This time we will not get the grade III and IV workers suffer," he said.

The AIIMS standing finance committee had proposed revisions on several allowances for faculty. The academic allowance, which was Rs 2,500, was revised to Rs 10,000, the learning allowance was revised from Rs 20,000 to Rs 60,000 and check on annual domestic and international conferences was also revised.

The workers gheraoed the administrative officer Attar Singh on Thursday morning. "We have given the administration 24 hour deadline failing which we will boycott work on Friday," said Kalia.
