The CBI has asked the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) for more time to submit its report on the probe into the allocation of coal blocks between 2006 and 2009.

The CBI was supposed to submit its report to the vigilance panel by August 31, but the agency sources clarified that there is no rigid time frame for submitting the report.

"The CVC has supervisory powers over the CBI in probes of corruption cases. We keep on updating the CVC on corruption probes but the time limit has always been very flexible. We will soon submit a report to the CVC on the coal block allocation probe," said a source.

The vigilance panel had received a complaint from two BJP MPs - Hansraj Ahir and Prakash Javadekar - about large scale corruption in the coal block allocation between 2006 and 2009. The vigilance panel had forwarded the complaint to the CBI with instructions to look into the issue.

The CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry in the matter. The agency has so far examined many retired and serving coal ministry official on the issue of allocation. The CBI teams have also conducted physical verification of the coal blocks. Teams of investigators are still in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh for on-the-spot verification of allocated blocks and examination of officials of private companies.
