The Meteorological Department would have officially declared this the arrival of monsoon in Delhi had there been some rain in the morning on Friday. “All the conditions to call this the monsoons are there. But as per meteorological rules, there must be good rainfall in the morning, which wasn’t there on Friday. But actual monsoon could even outpace our forecast,” said a senior official at Mausam Bhawan.

The total rainfall on Friday was just 4.2 mm, but the weatherman said it was evenly spread across the city.

Meanwhile, the pre-monsoon showers have arrived in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. “It has reached Uttar Pradesh and has hit parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. Delhi is next,” the Met official said.

Nippy winds along with the drizzle brought down the day temperature to 33 degrees Celsius, which was seven degrees below the expected. “This was also the coolest June 13 in the past five years,” said the duty officer at the Safdarjung unit of the Met department.

This day last year was 37 degrees Celsius, and records show that in the years before last the mercury had remained above 40-degree mark on this day.

The Met department has predicted similar conditions for the weekend.
