Anna team dares Cops to prevent Protest

Calling it as a “fundamental right”, the India Against Corruption team led by social activist Anna Hazare on Monday dared Delhi Police commissioner to prevent the people from reaching Jantar Mantar where they plan to hold a day-long fast on Wednesday.

They will be protesting the “undemocratic attack on the fundamental rights of the people who were peacefully fasting at Ramlila ground”.

Soon after abandoning the meeting of the draft committee for Lokpal bill, team Hazare, declared its intension to protest the incident at the Ramlila ground on the intervening night of June 4 and 5, wherein hundreds of supporters of yoga guru Baba Ramdev were brutally thrown out from the venue.

“The right to assemble peacefully and without arms is a guaranteed fundamental right under article 19 (1)(b) of the
constitution,” Shanti Bhushan, a senior most civil society member in the drafting committee for the Lokpal bill said in his letter to the police commissioner.

With reference to the police imposing section 144 in the entire central Delhi, Bhushan reminded the police officer that prompted by the Delhi high court, the police had recently filed an affidavit to the effect that section 144 of the Cr PC would be invoked as and when warranted because of an emergent situation.
