The victim, has already undergone several rounds of surgery, including the one where her small intestines had to be removed, earlier this week.

She was put off ventilator the day before after there was marginal improvement in her condition. But she was put on ventilator again Saturday evening after she started having trouble in breathing.

“She was in pain all of last evening. We got worried when she had difficulty in breathing and called the doctors, who said it was either because of infection or heavy medication,” said the father of the victim, refusing to comment further.

Early Sunday morning, doctors at Safdarjung Hospital also called in the liver and gastro-intestinal specialists to see her.

“Saturday night, we withdrew analgesics, thinking that the pain was due to the high dose but the pain lingered till today morning,” said Dr BD Athani, medical superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital.

While the woman’s bilirubin count has reached 6.3 (normal 1), indicating infection, her platelet count dropped from 41,000 to 19,000, raising fears of bleeding and haemorrhagic shock.

“So far, there is no bleeding, but there is a fair chance of that happening. Next 8-10 days will be very critical for her,” said Dr MC Misra, chief, AIIMS trauma centre.
