"Two battalions of the Rashtriya Rifles have been redeployed in the Kashmir valley as part of a routine local exercise by the formations here," Army PRO in Srinagar Lt Col J S Brar said.

"The basis of redeployment is the threat perception in particular areas and we are redeploying troops from low-threat areas to high-threat areas," he added.

Army, sources said, has moved one battalion each of the Rashtriya Rifles from Handwara in North Kashmir and Qazigund in South Kashmir.

Asked if the troops were being pulled out of the state, he said, "No, this is not any kind of deinduction or pullout of troops as they will remain deployed in the counter insurgency grid in Jammu and Kashmir only".
