The special drive, police claimed, had its effect as the number of fatal accidents came down to five this year compared to last year's 15.

Seven persons, including a couple, were killed in accidents this year as against 15 last year. "A total of 7,956 people were challaned for various traffic violations. Out of this, 6,660 were cash compounded and we have collected Rs 7,88,300 as fine from them," Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said.

In the last 11 years, 165 people have lost their lives on the day of Holi with 2006 topping the list with 22 killed in 20 accidents. For drunken driving, 624 people were challaned while yesterday while 154 were booked for dangerous driving and 1,702 for red light jumping. The challans for other heads are: triple riding (815), without helmet (2,686), tinted glass (163), defective number plates (133).

A couple -- insurance agent Vinay Rai (27) and his wife Deepa (23) -- were killed in Mukarba Chowk yesterday when their motorcycle collided with a tempo while their minor children escaped death. While a 28-year-old and 19-year-old died when their motorcycle rammed into a divider in Dabri, an unidentified man met with death in a similar fashion in Mongolpuri. A 45-year-old woman pedestrian was killed when she was hit by a car in Neb Sarai and a 20-year-old man crushed to death by a motorcycle in Punjabi Bagh. Two teenagers drowned in the capital yesterday while they were taking bath in river Yamuna after celebrating Holi.
