The Delhi Cabinet gave its in-principle approval to revise auto and taxi fare on Monday. The new fare structure will come into effect from Wednesday.

HT has learnt the base fare for auto rickshaws will be increased for Rs 10 to Rs 20 for the first two km. The meter will start ticking after that and will cost Rs 6 — up from Rs 4.50 — for every km after that.

Yellow-and-black cabs will also cost more. The fare for the first km is hiked from Rs 15 to Rs 20 and from Rs 12 to Rs 15 for every km after that.

“It (revision of auto fare) was informally discussed in the Cabinet and will be notified tomorrow,” Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, said. “With the hike in gas (CNG) prices, it had to happen.”

The government also plans to introduce low fare non-AC cabs in Delhi. Tentatively named ‘Green Service’, they will cost Rs 10 per km.
