The Delhi BJP on Saturday warned the power regulator of a massive agitation if it goes ahead with another tariff hike in the city.
Alleging a major fraud in the power sector, Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said that they had set a deadline of March 21 for the regulator to answer its questions on submission of fudged data of power discoms.
In a letter to Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) chairman PD Sudhakar, Goel threatened to launch an agitation against the regulator if it failed to provide satisfactory answers within five days on a number of issues, including how ‘huge hikes’ in tariff had been effected in the last two years without carrying out a proper check on discoms’ accounts.
He alleged that the DERC, discoms and the Delhi government were “collectively conniving to hike power tariff at the instigation of Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit”.
“Power tariff has been hiked in Delhi by a whopping 59% in the last two years, the highest increase among all states. In Gujarat, the rates were increased by only six per cent hike in the same period. A massive scam involving the discoms, the Delhi government and the DERC is going on in the power sector in Delhi. I have sought answers to so many questions from DERC. If it does not reply by March 21, then we will start an agitation. We will gherao the DERC office and will force him to quit,” Goel said.
The BJP alleged that the DERC had been allowing such hikes in tariff without scrutinising the accounts of the discoms. “The regulator has been acting in violation of various provisions of the Electricity Act, National Electricity Policy and National Tariff Policy. According to the National Tariff Policy, the consumers should be supplied power at reasonable rates and there should be competition among the power companies so that the consumers may benefit,” he added.

{{/usCountry}}Power tariff was hiked by 22% in 2011 followed by 5% hike in February last year. The tariff was hiked by up to 2% in May last year and again by 26% for domestic consumers in July last year. The tariff was hiked by up to 3% last month.
