Brijesh Kumar Gupta, the director general (prisons) at Tihar Jail, is set to become Delhi’s new police commissioner next week, taking over from incumbent chief YS Dadwal.
A senior home ministry source confirmed the development, saying 58-year-old Gupta, 1975-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and postgraduate in Law and History (Allahabad University), was chosen since he was the most senior IPS officer in the city police after Dadwal (1974 batch).
The other two contenders for the post were special commissioner of police (administration) Neeraj Kumar (1976 batch) and special commissioner (traffic) Ajay Chadha (1977 batch).
Dadwal is expected to take over as director general of Sashastra Seema Bal.
In his career spanning 35 years, Dadwal’s successor has tackled various challenges including counter-terror and counter-insurgency.
