The Indira Gandhi International Airport witnessed high drama late on Wednesday night after black-and-yellow taxi drivers got into a fight with radio cabbies. The police arrested eight cab drivers after many vehicles got damaged.
Trouble began after the private airport operator Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) changed the lanes of radio cabs on Wednesday night. The radio cabs were shifted to the first lane near the Terminal 3 but not the black-and-yellow cabs, which led to protests by the the latter.
“Slogan shouting soon gave way to scuffles between the drivers of black-and-yellow cabs and radio cabs,” said an airport official who didn’t wish to be named. “Police intervened after some black and yellow cab drivers broke the windshields of nearly 20 radio cabs parked next to the terminal,” he said.
“DIAL changed the lanes last night and it was after that black-and-yellow cab drivers and radio cab drivers got into a fight. The drivers broke window panes of a few radio cabs,” said RA Sanjeev Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI). “We have arrested eight people in the matter.”
“As per the recommendation of the Bhure Lal committee, DIAL had moved the operations of Delhi Transport Corporation buses to the first lane in the arrival area of T3. As this was causing inconvenience to the passengers boarding the cabs, the radio cabs were also moved to the first lane,” said a DIAL spokesman.“There was no change in the positioning of black-and-yellow taxis but the drivers started shouting slogans against this passenger facilitation measure and created a commotion outside the Terminal building. They damaged nearly 20 radio cabs.”

{{/usCountry}}DIAL said the police brought the situation under control by suspending the operation of black-and-yellow taxis. “Regular announcements were made by DIAL both inside and outside the T 3 to inform passengers of the disruption in black-and-yellow taxi services and the alternate mode available,” he said.
Meanwhile, Devendra Singh of the International Airport Taxi Union, said: “Drivers of both black- and-yellow cabs and radio cabs were involved in the fighting but a case was registered only against us.”
