The carpenter roped in his two brothers, who are also carpenters, and successfully abducted the boy from his house.

Their attempt to act smart, however, landed them in the police net and the trio is now cooling their heels in Tihar jail.

Police also managed to rescue the victim, Rajbir, from their clutches in five hours. The boy’s father Gaurav Bali runs an auto spare parts shop at Sehgal Motor Markets, Kashmere Gate.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sarfraz Ali, 26, the carpenter, and his brothers, Sartaz Ali, 23 and Gul Mohammad, 20, the police said.

“A police team collected details about people who had access to the complainant’s house. During investigation, it was learnt that a few days ago one Sarfraz had an argument with Bali over the non-payment of Rs 4,000,” said IB Rani, deputy commissioner of police (north).

Investigators found Sarfraz’s mobile switched off.

To mislead the police, Sarfraz contacted Bali and said he was unaware of Rajbir’s absence. “We apprehended Sarfraz when he arrived at the complainant’s house and interrogated him. He eventually broke down and confessed to the crime,” the officer said.
